Modern Rock - what do you like???

I gotta pay my respect to Morphine, a very unique band and a tragic loss when Mark Sandman passed away. They proved that a baritone sax can propel a rock band as well as a guitar.

All their albums are worth seeking out. Check out the song "Top Floor, Bottom Buzzer" off of "The Night" for a GREAT party song.

"...by the time we put the Al Green on, the bottle was gone."

Can you believe Mark Sandman has been gone for almost 7 years??? :( I have Yes, B-Sides and Otherwise, and The Night, but the cd I play the most by far is Like Swimming. I remember playing it when we would have overnight shelving at Borders, and no one seemed to like it...just couldn't understand folks not loving it..... A sound and lyrics like no one else.

Recent Rock lps that have been revving my stereo: Sonic Youth "Rather Ripped," which is their most melodic record, ever. It sounds like Sonic Youth being influenced by the bands that were influenced by Sonic Youth: Pavement, Helium, 18th Dye, Yo La Tengo. The National "Alligator," this one is a pure grower, it's gotten better to my ears with each listen. Glittering, shimmering guitar pop rock, with a singer in the baritone area. Three new Robert Pollard side-projects: The Keene Brothers, a collaboration with Tommy Keene, that is pure powerpop; The Takeovers, a long-distance collab with a bunch of Northwestern rockers, like Mudhoney, Quasi, and Chris Slusharenko; and Psycho and the Birds, an old-school lo-fi combination of boombox recordings, and studio stuff, with every song a post-punk nugget that's between a minute and two minutes long.

They're just a little too poppy for me, but I love Neko Case. Saw her a month ago in a very hot hall. She came in the back door with the band, felt the heat and turned around to loosely tie up her hair. Proceeded back in, stepped up to the microphone and BAM, there's that amazing voice. It's a cliche to be impressed by her voice, but damn it, it's true. Solo she's more of a country/country-rock performer than what she does with the The New Pornographers, but whatever you want to call it I like it! Aside from doing most (if not all) of her latest Fox Confessor album her version of Dylan's "Buckets Of Rain" was such that I wanted to be taken prisoner and hauled away on her bus.

I've also just started checking out New Pornographers Daniel Bejar's side project Destroyer. No, it sounds nothing like Kiss, though his voice does sound remarkably like a Hunky Dory David Bowie. Have only played Streethawk: A Seduction a couple of times but it seems like future spins will reap rewards due to the songwriting. The Concord blow out will likely slow down dipping into some of his other albums for awhile.

I love all things New Pornographers, including AC Newman, Destroyer, and especially Neko Case. She should be required to sing harmony on every recording ever made. Amazing stuff.

The Bleeding Heart Show from Twin Cinema is probably my favorite song of the last 5 years or so.

I haven't gotten into "Twin Cinema" as much as "Electric Version", so far. I'll take a listen to "Bleeding Heart Show", though.

Super Furry Animals are the Best Rock Band on Earth- mwng, Rings Around the World (Mojo's 2001 album of the year), Phantom Power and the latest, Love Kraft are all just the awesomest. And mwng is sung entirely in Welsh.

Also: Supergrass. Gorky's Zygotic Mynci. All bands I discovered within the last 10 years, all of which I still keep up with. But I don't keep an ear out for new rock anymore. Don't care what the kids are doing. I am old.

But even at my advanced age I would proudly wear a Super Furries t-shirt. Go download Rings Around the World, Phantom Power and Love Kraft at emusic, or buy the hits comp. And rock.

Gorky's How I Long to Feel that Summer in My Heart and Spanish Dance Troupe albums are at emusic too. And Yourmusic has most of the 'grass, including their latest, Road to Rouen. Best title ever.

The first 2 Supergrass albums were definitely rockers with some great tunes. They seemed to lose some of their edge after that.

I like "Rings Around the World", especially the title track. My friend is a big SFA fan and took me to see them a few years ago. I can't say it was a great show, but it was entertaining enough.

sjarrell, have you checked out kingsbury manx? They are a fantastic band based out of chapel hill. One of the members works at cd alley down there. He told me that they actually formed here in wilmington. They are represented by billions corporation. In some circles, that is a sure sign that they 'made it.'

Others that we've been listening to recently, all can be had at various organissimo-approved online retailers so use the search feature at the top of this page:

I'll say it again, I L A D Yeah, my brother is in the band, but that should not detract from the recommendation. I am a believer.

Jolie Holland Springtime Can Kill You Absolutely gorgeous music. There is an unbelievably waivering quality to her music, similar to what you hear on the Atavistic Unheard Music Series Country Brass Bands. I also relate it to the modulation that I hear on the Vashti Banyan/Animal Collective EP. She really is an amazing singer & musician. So many people on this board would really like this disc, but probably won't ever read this thread and buy it.

Gillian Welch Soul Journey What can I say... if you don't know, you don't know.

Mike Andrews (Elgin Park) You may recognize this name as a member of Greyboy Allstars. His solo output couldn't be more different. Maybe not as psych-folk as psych-folk listeners would tell you, but it seems to fit into his melodic ideas. Freaks and Geeks fans may also recognize his name, as he composed the score for the show. Good stuff. Good good stuff.

Archer Prewitt OK, so if you are familiar with these artists, you are probably already in tune with the listening mood. Another solid recording from a member of The Sea and Cake.

I hope someone checks some of this stuff out and reports back. All very good music that 'rewards repeated listening'.

Anybody like The New Pornographers? I've been listening to the "Electric Version" quite a bit lately and there are some terrific power-pop tunes there.

Count me in. I like their first two albums. The latest one (Twin Cinema?) not so much. I borrowed it from a library first, and it wasn't bad but just didn't grab me somehow.

Anyone know of any good "modern rock" discussion forums out there? The Organissimo forums are the place to go for jazz, obviously...but is there an equivalent for discussions of current goings-on in the rock music world?

Probably about a MILLION of them, but I wouldn't know where to tell you to start.

What's good about discussing modern rock here is that it is with people who also like jazz, so you already have a sense of where the members are coming from.

I know this band doesn't really fit the timeframe that applies to this thread (15 yrs old or younger), but if anyone's interested in R.E.M.'s 80's stuff, they have a new compilation of the IRS years, as well as an IRS years DVD that just came out. Best Buy has the 2-cd set (1 disc best of, 1 disc of rarities) for $14.99, and the DVD for $16.99 or thereabouts.

They are priced comparably at Amazon.com. However, if you put both of them in your cart at Amazon, and proceed to the checkout, it somehow gives you a discount of $24.98 on your purchase, and shipping is free too. So you get BOTH the 2-cd set plus the DVD for a total of $14.99 shipped to your door. Great deal for those who like this band's earlier output....

edit - so is r.e.m. considered modern rock or classic rock now?

Just got this one:

White Whale - WWI (Merge)

And I really like it. Not just because three of the dudes I've known for years, but because they create nuanced, uplifting music with hints of Desert Rock, T-Rex glam and dusky, vicarious storytelling (and some actually great piano playing).

Band members are culled from the ranks of Boys' Life, Butterglory, the Get Up Kids and the Higher Burning Fire. It didn't leave my car for four days after Saturday, when I got the disc and saw their gig, on their first tour together. A hip scene, indeed.

The Weird Weeds, from Austin, Texas, are my new favorite current band. Drumset/vocals and two guitars, one of which is played on the floor with a violin bow and chalk slide. It's not "free-folk" or any of that crap, but indie-pop with a churning psychedelic/free undertow. Excellent stuff!

Have you heard Nick Hennies or Sandy Ewan's solo material? Worth looking into; definitely more in the "free improv" vein. Tide's in.

update - I went to check my order status today, only to find that there was no order status. Amazon cancelled my order (and didn't tell me). I called their customer service, and spoke to a rep there, who explained it was a "pricing error" on Amazon's part, and at their discretion they cancelled my order.

I griped about them not honoring a price that was legitimately listed on their site, but couldn't get past the "our pricing error" argument. Apparently they don't have any supervisors available to speak with at this hour, either.

I also told her if it was actually a mistake (which I suspect), wouldn't it make better sense to suck it up and honor the offer anyway (and continue the goodwill with this customer) rather than lose any of my future business?

Oh well. Their loss. I very rarely purchase any new, regular-priced items from them anyway.

Yep, got the Solo Percussion disc and also the Spiderwebs on Jyrk (Ewen-Tom Carter duo). Not so into the comp material, even hers.

Classic rock? That's a frightening concept! Hey, though it could be for all I know, as what used to be classic rock is often called "oldies." In fact, I was at a bar near campus last week and there was a flyer for a "90s Night" coming up. NINETIES NIGHT?!?

Same story with me, including my rarely shopping there. Only thing different is how I spell my first name. Probably wrong I'm guessing. ;)
