Kevin Bresnahan Posted October 29, 2004 Report Posted October 29, 2004 (edited) Boy, has this thread twisted out of bounds! I am not a human of the female persuasion so I can't identify with this, but my wife considers the "C word" to be the most offensive slur for any woman. Many years ago, she nearly punched out another woman who called her that. In the 25 years I've known this woman, it was the closest I ever saw her come to physical violence. I don't know what it is about that word, but up here in the northeastern section of our country, it's tantamount to calling a woman an "Internet whore" on-line. JSngry Posted October 29, 2004 Report Posted October 29, 2004 Looks like 60 Minutes was backstage for the whole affair: http://www.comcast.net/providers/fan/popup...fig/default.xml Don't know if this link will work for non-Comcast subscribers, but it looks to be a teaser for an upcoming segment. Alexander Posted October 30, 2004 Report Posted October 30, 2004 The song they were playing on SNL was "Less Than Zero" which dealt with a British politician (Oswald Mosley). Here in the States we would think "Mr. Oswald" was Lee Harvey or something so the song doesn't really mean anything on this side of the pond. That's why EC said something like "I'm sorry - there's no reason for us to play this song" and then jumped into "Radio, Radio". At the time, "Less Than Zero" was their current hit in Britain so that's probably why they chose it in the first place. On the two disc re-release of "My Aim Is True" there's a live version called "Less Than Zero (Dallas Version)" recorded in Dallas Texas (natch), and the lyrics are changed to reference the Kennedy assassination. Clever boy, that Elvis. Two points: One: The reason Costello stopped playing "Less Than Zero" on SNL and launched into "Radio, Radio" is because he'd been specifically asked *not* to play "Radio, Radio" (which was his then-current single). It was felt (by NBC) that the song would be offensive to some of their affiliate stations, many of which owned radio stations as well. "You'd better shut up or get cut out, they don't want to hear about it, it's only inches on the reel to reel. And the radio is in the hands of such a lot of fools tryin' anaesthetise the way that you feel..." Funny, I think that with Clear Channel, that song becomes more and more relevant all the time... Costello was also apparently a bit honked off because he and the Attractions had been booked as last minute replacements for the Sex Pistols (or the Ramones...I can never remember which), and because Dan Ackroyd had mocked him backstage earlier that evening. Costello also claims that he'd been inspired by a famous moment on British TV in which Jimi Hendrix stopped playing "Hey Joe" and launched into a version of "Sunshine of Your Love" saying that "Hey Joe" was "a lot of old rubbish." Two: I believe that the "Dallas" version of "Less Than Zero" on the Rhino edition of "My Aim Is True" is actually from the "Live at the El Mocambo" album, which was recorded NOT in Dallas, TX but in Toronto. Jazzmoose Posted October 30, 2004 Report Posted October 30, 2004 I keep seeing references to Ashlee Simpson's "show"; isn't this the girl that's in the cast of Seventh Heaven? Or am I confused again? (I'm not sure as I'm not allowed to watch the darn thing. It's my wife's favorite drama; I made the mistake of thinking it was an over-the-top screwball comedy, and apparently my constant laughter was found to be insulting...) Quote
Jazzmoose Posted October 30, 2004 Report Posted October 30, 2004 And by the way, Rainy; my apologies...I understand the offense now. The word didn't carry the significance it does now when and where I grew up, and I forget sometimes... Quote

George Carlin referred to it along with "piss" as the two that women simply refuse to say. My theory is that any English word whose only vowel(s) are a short "u" is going to be seen as at least a little gross. For example: "butt," "crust", and "butt-crust." Jazzmoose Posted October 30, 2004 Report Posted October 30, 2004 Women hate the word. George Carlin referred to it along with "piss" as the two that women simply refuse to say. Really? Piss??? Hmm..now that you mention it, I don't think I've ever heard Barb say piss, and she does look at me funny when I do...but then she's always a perfect lady, unless she's behind the wheel! I'll never forget the day someone cut her off, and "goddamn fucking son of a bitch" came flying out before she caught herself. Me? I was absolutely rolling....fortunately, she saw the humor fast enough to spare my worthless life... Quote

hutch head Posted October 31, 2004 Report Posted October 31, 2004 You know what's really funny? Eminem was obviously lip synching his first song on SNL last night! Quote
scottb Posted November 1, 2004 Report Posted November 1, 2004 Eminem was obviously lip synching his first song on SNL last night! Yes I saw that too! What I find funny about that is he'll be the first to rip on Simpson for doing it. I'm with Jim on the Simpson thing. It looks like an inside job! Maybe the band is tired of taking the blame HER lack of talent. I wouldn't count out the SNL staff either. The writers, producers and performers of that show seem to have musical tastes and they definitely have the balls to pull something like that off. Quote
