John B Posted October 19, 2004 Report Posted October 19, 2004 (edited) Is there a price guide for how much is a reasonable cost for original Saturn / El Saturn vinyl? I know that the price must vary greatly due to condition and relative scarcity. I've been thinking about starting to buy some of these and have no clue what that would entail financially or if there are still deals to be had out there. Also, is there a guide listing which albums have been reissued on vinyl? Edited October 19, 2004 by John B Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted October 19, 2004 Report Posted October 19, 2004 (edited) I have a handful of early, original Saturns -- and a Japanese kid (college age) offered me $50 each for them, about 8 years ago. I said 'no thanks' rather firmly, and then he said he thought he could get $100 each for them back in Japan. (He was over here for school, and was buying up things he thought he could resell back home, just to turn a dime.) Doesn't mean that's what they're worth. Just that you're likely to find some pretty high prices, depending on what you're looking for. Any recently closed auctions on eBay give any hints?? Edited October 19, 2004 by Rooster_Ties Quote
Claude Posted October 19, 2004 Report Posted October 19, 2004 (edited) In the Goldmine Jazz album price guide 2000, most original Saturn albums from from the 60's are listed with a price of $12.5 (very good) to $50 (new mint). Some rare pressings are $200-300 (NM). The ABC/Impulse! reissues from the 70's are listed with a value of $5 (VG) to $20 (NM). But my experience on Ebay (just looking at the winning bids) is the they easily go for twice the price listed in the Goldmine. Maybe a later version of the catalogue will be adapted to the current vinyl boom and the Ebay madness. I've never seen an original Saturn at used records stores here in Europe. Rooster_Ties Posted October 19, 2004 Report Posted October 19, 2004 This is one I own an original of... SUN RA "Universe In Blue" ORIGINAL 1972 SATURN LP And here's another one I have (not a Saturn)... Sun Ra - Other Voices, Other Blues - Horo dbl LP I've got about 30 Sun Ra LP's, of which about 6 or 7 are Saturns. Have to look through them, and remind myself of which titles. Bought nearly all of them from a single seller, back around 1991. Paid $100 (total, including shipping!!) for all of them -- which turned out to be between $3 or $4 per disc. All in all, a pretty good deal!!! To this day, this was probably the single 'biggest' Internet puchase I've ever made -- in terms of the number of items in any one single transaction. (Actually, technically I was on "BITNET" back then, so this pre-dates my days on the Internet -- though I suppose it was all the same thing, in a sense, too.) Quote

Goldmine has this listed at $50 in NM condition. Quote
JohnS Posted October 23, 2004 Report Posted October 23, 2004 Such is life. I rememebr when Mole had a batch of these, hand painted covers and all for about £4.00. Passed 'em all by. Quote

I remember when I could've bought a whole wall of Saturn LPs for cheap from 3rd Street Jazz in Philly. But I wasn't as interested in Sun Ra back then. I could kick myself. Oh well. Quote

I should put my mint original Saturns in a safe by now... Quote

Late Posted October 23, 2004 Report Posted October 23, 2004 Have any of you been picking up the Saturn vinyl reissues, or the recent reissues by Art Yard, out of the UK? They're usually around $12.99 (the Saturns) or $19.99 (the Art Yards). I was wondering in general about sound quality and packaging. I usually don't shop for vinyl these days, but have been tempted by some of the Saturns that are vinyl only (e.g. My Brother the Wind, Vol. 1). Quote
sidewinder Posted October 25, 2004 Report Posted October 25, 2004 I picked up the 'Strange Strings' and 'Atlantis' LPs on reissued Saturn for about £10-£12 and was reasonably happy with the sound. 'Strange Strings' is one very weird album.. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted October 29, 2004 Report Posted October 29, 2004 This is a little out of the topic, but what about the original ESP vinyl? $15-20 or so... Nothing Is, is probably the strongest of the three, though Heliocentric 1 has some nice moments. Vol. 2 kinda blows. Quote

How can you tell if an album is a reissue or an original Saturn? Are there any clues on the front or back covers? I'm assuming tht, if still sealed, you are most likely looking at a reissue. Is theer any way to know for sure with an unsealed copy? Quote
Late Posted November 2, 2004 Report Posted November 2, 2004 How can you tell if an album is a reissue or an original Saturn? Are there any clues on the front or back covers? I'm guessing that the easiest way to tell the difference is price! But, as for clues, I just don't know; I actually have yet to purchase any vinyl reissues ... though I want to! Quote
