Joanne Brackeen is one of my favorute pianist. She redefines every tune ahe plays. Bounderies do not exist for her: she can play hard bop as well as free jazz. This one is one of her best trio recordings.

Agreed that Ms. Brackeen is a very powerful musician, overlooked in a way (at least by me), though I enjoy the 4 or 5 recordings of hers I own.

Who rounds out the trio on this CD? Is the program all originals or a mix of standards and originals. Often I find the latter works best for my listening.

1. There Is No Greater Love (Jones, Symes) 8:17

2. Picasso (Brackeen) 12:37

3. My Funny Valentine (Hart, Rodgers) 10:24

4. Just One of Those Things (Porter) 8:05

5. Darn That Dream (DeLange, VanHeusen) 6:04

6. Caravan ( Ellington, Mills, Tizol ) 9:15

7. Power Talk ( Brackeen ) 9:29

8. Cosmic Ties and Mud Pies (Brackeen) 2:37

Bassist Ira Coleman and drummer Tony Reedus are doing a perfect job with Mrs. Brackeen.

BTW: both recorded very good sessions also with another great pianist: Mulgrew Miller.

I'd sure be well-pleased if somebody would get her Tappan Zee sides out on CD, especially the one w/Joe Henderson (the tenor player, not the singer). That's some good stuff.

I'm with Jim -- those Tappan LPs were strong, especially "Ancient Dynasty" with Joe Henderson along for the ride. Though I haven't heard it for a long time, I also recall liking "Fi Fi Goes to Heaven" from the mid 80s. Had a brighter melodic sound to it than I often associate with Brackeen.

Here she is with Joe's band; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=khOd1oRCXPA
