Guy Berger Posted May 6, 2005 Report Posted May 6, 2005 (edited) This is unrelated to current playoff madness, but I found a pretty cool website that has pretty much any NBA facts/stats you'll ever want. The reason I was looking for it is because in 1990, my dad took me and my brother (we were 11 and 8 at the time) to a Warriors-Suns game. The Warriors (who were a decent team at the time -- Nellie was the coach, Run TMC etc) lost, which sucked. But the game is memorable because (A) the Warriors got a lot of technical fouls -- at least 6, maybe 10 (obviously Don Nelson got ejected), and (B) Tom Frickin' Chambers scored 56 points (!!!). Unfortunately I can't find a box score or game recaps for this thing, but it happened on this day. I also think Manute Bol shot a 3-pointer but I may be confusing it with another game. That means you're only 26?!? Damn Guy, I always thought you were much older by your posts. That's a compliment, by the way!!! Thanks Jim. While taking a break from grading, I took advantage of the free NY Times archive and dug out some more details about that game: OAKLAND, Calif., Feb. 18 (AP) -- Tom Chambers scored a team record 56 points today as the Phoenix Suns beat Golden State, 131-113, ending the Warriors' franchise-record home winning streak at 15 games. Chambers, whose previous career high was 46 points, made his first 10 shots from the field and had 40 points in the first half, the most ever allowed by the Warriors. Wilt Chamberlain held the previous high in a half against the Warriors with 36 for Philadelphia on March 3, 1966. Karl Malone's 61 points Jan. 27 for the Jazz against the Bucks are the most in the league for this season. I was wrong, by the way -- Manute did not shoot a 3 pointer in this game. The Warriors had 7 technicals total. Edited May 7, 2005 by Guy Berger Quote
Stefan Wood Posted May 7, 2005 Report Posted May 7, 2005 Man it has been insane here in DC. Yeah, they'll probably get swept by the Heat, but we're talking about an organization that has defined futility for 20+ years, and to not only be in the playoffs, but to win a series, is awesome. I'll even go out on a limb and say that they'll even win one game against the Heat! Quote
BruceW Posted May 7, 2005 Report Posted May 7, 2005 (edited) for all the chumpions fans Seems to me you got this all wrong. Shouldn't you Laker fans be wearing something like these? Edited May 7, 2005 by BruceW Quote
BruceW Posted May 7, 2005 Report Posted May 7, 2005 Nash winning the MVP is crap. We all know who it should go to... No it is not crap. Shaq cannot win everything all the time. He is not alone at the top of being Most Valuable Player. Nash deserves, Shaq deserves, so does Big Ben, and so does Duncan and Ginobli, and even Shaq's teammate Flash, and a few other guys, but only one person can get the honor. This time it is Nash. So everyone quit dissing the guy and STFU. He did a great job this season. No disrespect but you guys should be worried about Detroit. DETROIT STILL ROCKIN' Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted May 7, 2005 Author Report Posted May 7, 2005 No, I don't think there is any doubt who should win the MVP. How many games did the heat win last year? 42. How many this year? 59. How many games did LA win with Shaq last year? 56. How many this year without Shaq? 34. That's a huge difference. I love the Pistons as much as you do, Bruce, but you gotta give Shaq some credit where it's due. Quote

But on the flipside, Phoenix only won 29 (28?) games last year and won 62 this year -- that's a much bigger turnaround than the Heat. It's fair to say that without the Shaq trade, Miami would still be a playoff team. Without signing Nash, Phoenix is lottery-bound. And yeah, I know that Dallas was better this year than last year, but besides losing Nash they also added Jason Terry, Jerry Stackhouse, Erick Dampier and Keith Van Horn. Guy Quote
BruceW Posted May 7, 2005 Report Posted May 7, 2005 WOW, I got you guys to talking, huh! Now if NOJ and SS1 will just join in....... then all we need is some bar-b-q and some beer..... On to the playoffs (Sat) Quote

Guy Incidentally, I think Duane Wade deserves as much credit as Shaq as far as Miami goes. Without Mr. Inside/Outside, they would not have won that many games just because of Shaq. and I love Detroit. AND believe it or not, I loved LA until Kobe showed his more negative attributes!!! Noj Posted May 8, 2005 Report Posted May 8, 2005 It is unfathomable to me that two professional basketball teams can manage a 35-32 half time score. The Pacers and Celtics both stink. The Dallas/Houston game can't come soon enough... Quote

ejp626 Posted May 8, 2005 Report Posted May 8, 2005 Well, SS1 was right about the Bulls, damn you!! Game 6 hurt more than game 5, since the Bulls outplayed the Wizards almost the entire game, then had a melt down and couldn't buy a basket in the last two minutes. I bet Chris Duhon will have nightmares about the ball bouncing off his shoulder all summer. So it sucks, but the Bulls still played their hearts out and would have advanced with a few more breaks (or calls) going their way in games 5 and 6. And they were missing two of their best offensive players, and they usually were playing three rookies on the floor at any given moment. I think they played well above their talent level, so you can't be too disappointed in the overall season. Next year should be pretty good (not that I am likely to catch any of it, living in England and all). A few general comments. I do hope the Wizards get swept for two reasons -- I'm still bitter and they need a serious ego check to become a better team next year. They did step up on defense for games 3-5, but I don't think it will last. They talked all kinds of trash and didn't take the Bulls seriously. Obviously they are the more talented team, but, as I said above, a few more breaks the other way and they would be the ones going to the park and feeding the ducks. They need a serious reality check about just how talented they are, and getting swept would certainly do that. What I don't like is this sense that coaches can whine about calls, and this really determines how the games are officiated. This apparently does work, since for several of the games, particularly 3 and 4, the refs were heavily biased against the Bulls. I find it sad that the directive from the league is to call the games so tight that you can't play real defense. When you compare what these coaches are complaining about, compared to the physical play from the late 1980s and 1990s, it is night and day. I guess the league just wants high scoring games and highlight reel moments, but I think the game suffers when you can't play defense due to fears of fouling out. Obviously, the Pistons will get more respect than the Bulls, but if this is truly the trend in officiating, then there is no way they can repeat. Not sure who I will root for now, but probably Detroit. Quote

Disagree about the Wiz being the more talented team -- once you get past the big 3 they are pretty thin. Bulls with Curry and Deng healthy are more talented. Guy Quote
