Soul Stream Posted May 27, 2003 Report Posted May 27, 2003 I had to pick "into something." It's one that is just a great picture/graphic....but also it so encompasses in visual exactly what the music SOUNDS LIKE!!!! Quote
vibes Posted May 27, 2003 Report Posted May 27, 2003 From this list, it was "Into Somethin'." My favorites, however, are probably "Judgment" and "One Step Beyond." Quote
Sahara Blue Orchestra Posted May 27, 2003 Report Posted May 27, 2003 INTA SOMETHIN' ALL THE WAY Quote
Jazzmoose Posted May 27, 2003 Report Posted May 27, 2003 No way I can vote on this one! If Cool Struttin' or Out to Lunch was there... Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted May 27, 2003 Report Posted May 27, 2003 I'm also a big fan of architecture, early 20th Century, mid-Century, modern - you name it. Had to vote for the Larry Young for that reason. One of my favorites. I even like the all-blue version from Spain!!! Quote
connoisseur series500 Posted May 27, 2003 Author Report Posted May 27, 2003 Mine was the lone vote for STEPPIN OUT. I like the social implications there. Funniest is definitely GOOD GRACIOUS. Couldn't resist sticking that one in the list. Love the photography of ROYAL FLUSH. Great match of music and picture on INTO SOMETHING, SMOKESTACK and JUJU. Quote
Gary Posted May 27, 2003 Report Posted May 27, 2003 Royal Flush (one of my firsy Blue Notes coincidentally) Quote
Alexander Posted May 27, 2003 Report Posted May 27, 2003 I chose "Smokestack" from the list, although my all time favorite is "Cool Struttin'." Quote
Parkertown Posted May 27, 2003 Report Posted May 27, 2003 Royal Flush, by a big lead (of these choices), followed by Into Something. That Donald Byrd cover just oozes Blue Note vibe! Quote
Son-of-a-Weizen Posted May 27, 2003 Report Posted May 27, 2003 None of the above. It's Capuchin Swing. I'm with him! Quote
marcoliv Posted May 27, 2003 Report Posted May 27, 2003 Hi! i voted for Into Somethin' from Larry Young but my favorite one is the cover for Spring´s Tony Williams. simple, straight and damn beautiful peace! Marcus Oliveira Quote
connoisseur series500 Posted May 27, 2003 Author Report Posted May 27, 2003 Hmm, looks like Larry Young, INTO SOMETHING is running away with it. Well why not; it's a great cover. Quote
JohnS Posted May 27, 2003 Report Posted May 27, 2003 I like The Magnificent Thad Jones (BN 1527) and Benny Green's Back On Tne Scene. It's something about evoking the period. Quote
sidewinder Posted May 27, 2003 Report Posted May 27, 2003 (edited) From this list it would have to be 'Smokestack' but my all-time faves would have to be: - Sam Rivers 'Dimensions and Extensions' (way cool ..) and 'Contours' - Johnny Coles 'Little Johnny C' - Johnny Griffin 'The Congregation' (another Warhol - nuff said !) - Horace Silver 'The Jody Grind' (check out Horace's chicks ! ) Edited May 27, 2003 by sidewinder Quote
king ubu Posted May 27, 2003 Report Posted May 27, 2003 Funniest is definitely GOOD GRACIOUS. Couldn't resist sticking that one in the list. Those were the days of the fatassa models Otherwise, so many great covers - and imagine they were done by a guy who likes classical music using the photography of some german - now zat swings! How about some sort of a "Blue Note Chappel"? (like the Rothko chappel) Sort of a cube where all walls are pasted with original LP jackets... not to meditate in, obviously... Quote
Brad Posted May 27, 2003 Report Posted May 27, 2003 Good Gracious is definitely a classic. Great look on Lou's face. One thing's for sure, you'd never see that cover today. Another thing that surprised me about this cd is how good the music is. It's constantly rewarding. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted May 28, 2003 Report Posted May 28, 2003 Actually, on further thought, I might have chosen Fuschia Swing Song, if it had been in the poll choices... Quote
Sundog Posted May 28, 2003 Report Posted May 28, 2003 (edited) I know it's not on the list, however I've always liked the cover to Dexter Gordon's "A Swingin' Affair". Often times jazz album covers seem to be so serious/pretentious. It's nice to see a simple picture of someone just kickin' back with a big smile on their face. Talk about loving one's work. Their are a number of Blue Note era Dexter covers that have a similiar theme. Edited May 28, 2003 by Sundog Quote
