medjuck Posted October 12, 2004 Report Posted October 12, 2004 Costello @ the El Mocombo Hey I was there! My wife, who's a journalist, got me in. Her hearing's still affected 25 years later. The cd captures it pretty well but it leaves out a guest appearance by Nick Lowe who sang "I Love the Sound of Breaking Glass". Quote

catesta Posted October 13, 2004 Report Posted October 13, 2004 (edited) In no particular order: 1969 All Star Tribute to Duke Ellington That's a good one! Another live recording I really enjoy... Very intimate, and I love the vibes Duke gives off. Edited October 13, 2004 by catesta Quote
Dave James Posted October 13, 2004 Report Posted October 13, 2004 What...no mention of Shelly Manne's Live at the Blackhawk? Those five discs are ones I return to with great regularity. That band is as crisp as the snap of a chalk line. And, it's very well recorded. Up over and out. Quote

catesta Posted October 13, 2004 Report Posted October 13, 2004 What's not to like? It's Duke being very much Duke. I find a spin it a lot on Sundays when taking it easy. It is for me a comfort cd. Quote
Sundog Posted October 13, 2004 Report Posted October 13, 2004 Mingus at Antibes has been mentioned a number of times and I totally agree. Also, have to put "Mingus In Wonderland" right up there. Quote
