7/4
That's a pretty cryptic review! What do you take him to mean by 'leav[ing] Bird in his dust'? Is it a reflection on the actual tempi taken? Nah. I think he's saying Braxton's performance blows the Parker away. But I'm not a big fan of that disk. I got it as the recent reissue...and .....eh.....doesn't do too much for me.
7/4
This from Leo web: CD LR 402/405 Anthony Braxton: 23 Standards audio CD is sold out -- however, end of April-2005 there will be new releases and among them another 4-CD set by Anthony Braxton called "20 Standards". 7/4
Crikey - more standards? Is this more culled from the same concerts, do we know? Not me. 23 Standards is from 2003, 8 Standards is from 2001.
Alexander Hawkins
Hang on - I'm confused: where did the 8 Standards come from ? Alexander Hawkins
BTW, just to confuse myself even more, I was listening to 7 Standards Vol.1 earlier today, and really enjoyed it. It 'worked' a lot better for me than I had thought; Hank Jones plays really nicely (obviously!). That Warne Marsh tune...

Alexander Hawkins
Ah...Ok, I'm getting there! This 20 Standards set which is upcoming, though - this is presumably the same band, is it? And from the same European gigs as 23 Standards? In any case, it's interesting that he should be releasing so many standards at the moment. Has the flow of 'traditionalist/stylist' orientated-stuff ever been like this before?

Chuck Nessa
At this point, there are either 100,000 or no standards. I can't afford that box.
Chuck Nessa
Yeah, no standards, that's the ticket.

MartyJazz
Hi! Since you´re all a bunch of Braxtonophiles... ...could you help me with the release date (this is, copyright or street year, not recording date) for any of the following discs?: - Steeplechase CD: SCS 37003/4 - What's New In The Tradition - Anthony Braxton (ldr) Posted this in a discographical thread on Tete Montoliu, but nobody brought release date for these issues. Cheers, AgustÃn I have the 2 disc Braxton set above which is simply titled IN THE TRADITION. It was released in 1991.
7/4
from the Braxton list: >From the latest Leo press release: 20 Standards (Quartet) 2003 The previous 4-CD set "23 Standards (Quartet) 2003" was an unprecedented artistic & "commercial" success (printed as a limited edition of 1000 copies, it is completely sold out). The new edition is the rest of those two famous European tours in 2003 with the same line-up: Kevin O'Neil on guitar, Kevin Norton on percussion, Andy Eulau on bass, and Anthony Braxton on saxophone. What you have here is 20 different standards (no repeats). 5 hours of music, and notes by Stuart Broomer. Limited edition of 1000 copies. Alexander Hawkins
Thanks for that! Might possibly hold off for now - I did enjoy the 23 Standards, but I have so much of his original music still to hear... I wish they'd have come to the UK on the Standards tour, though! EKE BBB
Been enjoying Braxton/Roach duo on hatOLOGY, "One in two-Two in one" this past weekend. An attentive listening of the interaction between the two players becomes a very rewarding experience!
Gary
I listened to this one for the first time this evening Composition No. 192 Anthony Braxton/Lauren Newton After reading the AMG review http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&t...10:utfjzfgoeh8k I was a bit wary , but on hearing it I was pleasantly surprised. I found the vocals to be hypnotic & I've not heard anything like it before, which is always a good thing. I was listening to the earlier standards box set whilst applying undercoat to some shelves and my fingers, it's a great set, the whole approach including the apparently "busted chops" that some find irksome is IMO deliberate and a considerable success. Hugely enjoyable
Alexander Hawkins
Had the 23 Standards on earlier, but it's been Birmingham (1985) for me most of today. Mark Dresser is a wonderful player.
