No, actually it is "Frank" -- the CD has a typo.
Thanks Jason! Wow! That would be a major typo! Right on the front cover too!

Never heard of the guy before, so you've whetted my appetite.

Will do some Googling...

I've been listening to (and enjoying) 23 Standards, but their version of Brubeck's "Raggy Waltz" is rough. Were they intentionally trying to butcher this tune? I have a hard time believing they included this track for any reason other than a perverse sense of humor.

I thought that was part of the fun! :g

I'm not sure if a tune with that many obvious flubs is toying with the listener, mocking the original tune, actually being flubbed, or some combination thereof.

I think of it as being in the tradition of Sun Ra.

I'm part of the way through viewing the Sonny Simmons DVD and Anthony Braxton features quite prominently in interview, with very impassioned affirmatives of SS and his attitude to music and life.

Have both of the 'Free America' Braxtons in my 'pending' pile, looking forward to listening to them. Quite a long time since I checked out any AB.

I'm quite fond of that version of 'It's a Raggy Waltz'. It clearly inspires mixed opinions, however. Nate once around linked a review at Bagatellen in which the reviewer expressly singled out the tune for criticism...

I have to say, surely it's a good thing that we can find Braxton's standards controversial in some way? There's so many people churning out generic stuff over these tunes, that at least it's a change!

But nevertheless, Black Saint and Hat both are repositories of many, MANY classic Braxton performances that will serve well to further one's interest in this particualr artist's massive body of work.

Go there!

I just ordered my 1st Braxton Black Saint, Five Compositions (Quartet). This is going to be one expensive discographical exploration! :g

That's a good'un!

And you're right - as I'm discovering to my cost (pun intended) - it is a mighty expensive business.

But the payoff!!!

This could be an exciting new release thats been mention on the Braxton Yahoo group & Rastascan site

It'll be a regular DVD, compatible with all DVD players. There will not

be

any video on it: it will be all music. (Okay, there might be a tiny bit

of

video material from the studio...depending on disc space.)

For you tech-minded folks, this won't be a DVD-A, but rather, a DVD-V

(the

same spec used for movie releases). The resolution is 24-bit, 48 kHz.

The reason we are doing this as a DVD is to avoid releasing a 7-CD box

set

(too expensive to make and ship), and to avoid cutting the 90-minute

pieces

in half. Although we don't have the final price set, it certainly isn't

going to be anywhere near the cost of a 7-CD box set.

ANTHONY BRAXTON

20 Standards (Quartet) 2003

Leo

Four more CDs from the same tour that yielded last year's four-CD 23 Standards (Quartet) 2003. The bounty results from Braxton picking fresh songs each show—jazz pieces more often than the usual chestnuts, with old favorites Brubeck and Desmond most prominent. Tracks stretch out leisurely, with Kevin O'Neil's deft guitar often the highlight, and Braxton's saxes favoring the high registers. The most accessible and simply pleasurable set he's done—smart and cool. A

Yeah, if you're Tom Hull, reviewing a few thousand CDs a month in a sentence or three (check out his website), then you probably don't notice that it's not a very good disc/set at all.

I didn't know he had a web site (I'll take a look later). But I enjoy the recent Braxton standards.

The band is tight, his playing is warped.

For "pleasurable" Braxton I'd go for the Arista/Bluebird Live album every time.

Ah yes...the Arista Braxton...fine music.
