LF: SR-71 Blackbird

Recommended Posts

My uncle (ret. AF Col.) out in Sacramento was a member of the SR-71 design team and has a house full of related memorabilia. I might be able to bring you part of the landing gear but we'd have to meet at either Jazzland or Zawinful's 'Birdland' for the big exchange later this fall. Have you thought about using the Melker Stiftskeller or the Zwölf-Apostelkeller to house the aircraft?

There's one currently on with a 'buy it now' option on the flight deck of the USS Intrepid. NYC seller but the condition is only VG, fuselage a bit rusty. There's also a rare UK import with seller location of Imperial War Museum Duxford..

Speaking of the Imperial War Museum, I've never been to the one in Duxford, but I've been to the main one in London and it is very, very impressive. They've got a Blitz and a WWI exhibit where you're taken back to those times and I swear you feel like you're living the experience. In the Blitz, you're in the underground and the lights go out and bombs are blasting above you and the room shakes and it feels like you're the one being subjected to the bombing.

If you're ever in London, don't miss this museum.

Duxford is an outpost to the main London branch of the Imperial War Museum but if you want to see the actual aircraft then Duxford is the place ! There is a very large hangar just dedicated to USAF aircraft types, many of them rare. The visitor briefing room is actually where they briefed the USAF fighter squadrons during WWII - and hardly changed ! Last time I was there about half a dozen Spitfire fighters of all denominations flew overhead on display (including some real Mk rarities), something they regularly schedule. Well worth the trip to Cambridgeshire ! :tup

Keeping your SR-71 looking good is a snap when you use the new no rinse product from Mr. Clean. You just apply the solution, wait a few minutes...no wiping necessary...and you're ready for take off. Not that I'd mind a little help from a spare redhead.

Up up up up up up over and out.
