Boy, they sure didn't record a lot of dates under trumpet players' names. 2 w/ Freddie, 2 w/ Clark Terry, 1 w/ Diz, and later on some more trivial Blue Mitchell. Tons of sax and piano dates... maybe it was because most other trumpet players were under contract??? I'm sure it's more complicated than that.

Ahh, Impulse. What an exciting catalog that is. I remember seeing those orange and black covers when they first appeared, and I still love their catalog. They were a bit more expensive than most other LPs, and, annoyingly, most of the details were sealed inside the gatefold cover. The production and presentation was second-to-none. The odor when you first opened those covers was fantastic. And the music! Although there were many Impulse artists, one mainly associated the label with Trane's strange new music, especially the Vanguard album, A-10.

Thanks largely to Michael Cuscuna, we can get nearly all of these albums on CD.

I hear you, the record store i went to at that time had the jackets displayed in wall racks. So as you pushed one rack over to look at the next, the spines faced you and you could not miss those orange spines in that sea of white.

In their first release i pretty much wore out Trane's Africa Brass and Gil Evans Out Of The Cool. I was hooked.

BTW we ended up a few years later buying that record store.

You mean those digipaks? That's a real problem, they begin to show surface wear very quickly when not handled with gloves. No idea, but I doubt they sell some without the disk. One could make a laser color copy and put it in a jewel box ...

I wonder if this has something to do with the producers' tastes.

Who was active for Impulse besides Creed Taylor and Bob Thiele?

Thiele obviously had something to do with the load of avant-garde (at the time) saxists recording for the label, but also gave us that wonderful series of Ellingtonians in the most wondrous constellations.

How much influence did Trane have on the Impulse output? He certainly never seems to have gone overboard on trumpeters... :w;)

If Coltrane ever wrote a book, it would have been titled "Life after Miles".
