Brownian Motion Posted September 29, 2004 Report Posted September 29, 2004 Ethel Waters, Hawk, Roy, and Jo Jones were guest stars on an episode of the long-gone television series "Route 66". Does anyone know whether the soundtrack to that show ever made it onto LP or CD? Quote
medjuck Posted September 29, 2004 Report Posted September 29, 2004 (edited) I can't answer your question but I remember seeing that episode. However I think Hawk is shown playing clarinet so he may not even be on the soundtrack. Edited September 29, 2004 by medjuck Quote

I'm pretty sure it was Hawk on the soundtrack--he played clarinet when he was with Fletcher Henderson--he even waxed a solo. Quote
Christiern Posted September 29, 2004 Report Posted September 29, 2004 I also saw the episode when it first aired. What struck me as odd was that they had Jo Jones on trumpet and Roy on drums! Quote
Hoyt Clagwell Posted September 30, 2004 Report Posted September 30, 2004 (edited) Most likely written by Stirling Silliphant. I have nothing really to add, I just like the name Stirling Silliphant. Edited September 30, 2004 by Hoyt Clagwell Quote
brownie Posted August 25, 2010 Report Posted August 25, 2010 Enjoy! Sounds like Roy Eldridge subbed for Jo Jones... Quote
gmonahan Posted August 25, 2010 Report Posted August 25, 2010 Thanks for posting that truly bizarre video. I wonder if *anybody* is actually playing his instrument in that one?!? Roy does look like he's playing the drums, but it doesn't appear to match the soundtrack at all. But definitely great fun to watch! gregmo Quote
Stereojack Posted August 25, 2010 Report Posted August 25, 2010 I wonder if *anybody* is actually playing his instrument in that one?!? Roy does look like he's playing the drums, but it doesn't appear to match the soundtrack at all. But definitely great fun to watch! Typically, the music was prerecorded, and the musicians pantomimed to the track. This was standard procedure in those days, mostly to allow for multiple camera setups. It sounds like Roy on trumpet to me. Was the switching of instruments some kind of inside joke, maybe? Quote
bichos Posted August 25, 2010 Report Posted August 25, 2010 Enjoy! Sounds like Roy Eldridge subbed for Jo Jones... thanks, brownie, for posting this link. seeing coleman hawkins with the clarinet is very unaacustomed and he looks indisposed. keep boppin´ marcel Quote
AllenLowe Posted August 25, 2010 Report Posted August 25, 2010 Jack's right - they're playing a joke on the squares: "Look those dumbasses can't tell the difference" Quote
