ghost of miles Posted March 12, 2003 Report Posted March 12, 2003 (edited) I'll be doing a radio show on Gigi Gryce and the new bio, Rat Race Blues, co-authored by our resident jazz scholar Michael Fitzgerald, on Monday, March 24 and Tuesday, March 25 from 3:30-5 p.m. Eastern time. Michael will be lending his expertise as a guest via long-distance telephone. There is a possibility that the show will be expanded into a two-part program continuing on the next day; I should have this finalized by the end of this week. You can find the link on Michael's web-page at Gryce or here: WFIU. I'll up this thread a day or so before broadcast, but wanted to let folks know in advance about the show. Michael Fitzgerald Posted March 12, 2003 Report Posted March 12, 2003 Looking forward to doing the interview and I hope some folks are able to tune in. It's always a pleasure to spread the word and share the music. Just got word today from the Association of Recorded Sound Collections (ARSC) that the book has been named as a finalist for their annual Award for Excellence. Mike Quote
mikeb Posted March 13, 2003 Report Posted March 13, 2003 (edited) Congrats, Mike!! You know, I was discussing with Dan Gould recently how guys named Mike are usually pretty cool ... Edited March 13, 2003 by mikeb Quote
pryan Posted March 26, 2003 Report Posted March 26, 2003 Did the show go ahead yesterday? I tuned in on Monday and was disappointed that the war coverage was on instead. If the show didn't happen, will there be a rescheduling? Thanks. Quote

Jim R Posted March 27, 2003 Report Posted March 27, 2003 Thanks, Ghost. I too was looking for the show on Monday. Glad to hear that we might be able to hear this in the future. Quote
mikeb Posted March 27, 2003 Report Posted March 27, 2003 Also glad to know that it might have another go in the future. I was at work without a sound card! Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted June 3, 2003 Report Posted June 3, 2003 (edited) I guess this is the Gigi Gryce thread. Following up on an earlier post - the Association of Recorded Sound Collections (ARSC) named "Rat Race Blues: The Musical Life of Gigi Gryce" as winner for Best Discography (Recorded Jazz Music) at their 2003 awards ceremony on May 31 in Philadelphia. Noal and I are very proud. Mike Edited June 3, 2003 by Michael Fitzgerald Quote
ghost of miles Posted June 3, 2003 Author Report Posted June 3, 2003 Congratulations, Mike! With my other station's permission (still pending), I'm hoping to re-broadcast my Gryce show, including a great deal of music and many comments from Mike, on WFHB-Bloomington Wednesday, July 30 from 6-9 p.m. (The show originally ran as a two-parter on our local NPR affiliate, but war coverage blocked out the stream.) I'll keep folks posted... Quote
Soul Stream Posted June 3, 2003 Report Posted June 3, 2003 great job mike. it's always amazing to see somebody make something happen because of their own enthusiasm for the subject. Quote
pryan Posted June 3, 2003 Report Posted June 3, 2003 Congrats, Mike. Your book is on my short-list of ones to read next (outside of school related books, that is). I'm looking forward to hearing that show (finally), Ghost. Damn, unjustified war. Quote
ghost of miles Posted July 22, 2003 Author Report Posted July 22, 2003 The two-part Gryce program with Mike that I did for WFIU-Bloomington last March didn't go out over the web because we were streaming news about the invasion of Iraq. My station manager has graciously allowed me to re-broadcast it on the other station where I have a show as a one-part, three-hour broadcast, on Wednesday, July 30 from 6-9 p.m. EST. WFHB has a semi-official streaming link, and I'll post it a day or two before the broadcast. Quote
