Alon Marcus Posted December 17, 2004 Author Report Posted December 17, 2004 jaki byard - blues for smoke (1960; candid) Great album - if Mingus hired this guy he sure had good taste in pianists BTW - did anyone got to hear the new Mehldau solo? Quote
Daniel A Posted February 11, 2008 Report Posted February 11, 2008 Though I'm aware that this album has been mentioned in other threads which I can't find at the moment, I'm using this thread to post that what is probably my all time favourite solo piano recording, "Have You Met Hank Jones" (Savoy, 1956), finally has been released on CD (by Fresh Sound). Might be a needle drop, though you'll never know until you've heard it, of course... Fresh Sound link Quote

It's a live recording from the Keystone Korner in the 1970s. It is well recorded, and is really good. Quote

Fresh Sound link I suppose the fact that the two unissued tracks from this date aren't on the CD tells us that Fresh Sound didn't have access to the original tapes . Chances are though , that even if Denon had got round to this one , their 'exact replica' fetishism would have yielded the same result anyway . Quote
AllenLowe Posted February 12, 2008 Report Posted February 12, 2008 (edited) sorry - best piano solo album EVER - Jaki Byard on Prestige - there's more than one, but both are the best piano solo album ever, trust me - everything else is, well, just piano - Edited February 12, 2008 by AllenLowe Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted March 21, 2011 Report Posted March 21, 2011 (edited) Two I've really enjoyed lately. Both very deep recordings, particularly the Mal... John Hicks "Steadfast" (Strata East, 1975) Mal Waldron "On Steinway" (Teichiku, 1972) Edited March 21, 2011 by Rooster_Ties Quote
