My favorite Marsalis record is Black Codes. Hot House Flowers is a reasonably close second. There's a live at Blues Alley that I used to enjoy but have not listened to in years. J Mood was a disappointment to me.

I dod not vote.

The two I can put up with would be the Vanguard box, which is what I voted on. Also, Black Codes from the Underground.

Dan, I'm sure you can find Black Codes somewhere for $2. It's far and away his best record to me and the only one I can recommend to people. Even Albertson might admit it's good.

Okay I guess I should venture into this one....

Hard to choose... But the Village Vanguard box, Blood On the Fields and the new JALC Vitoria Suite come to mind... Just replaying the Symphony Swing show on PBS and that's very good....

I am not totally turned off by some of his work with Blakey, made at a time when one could still consider his musical immaturity. I really thought he would eventually develop a feeling for the music, but I was being overly optimistic.

Always had a soft spot for that record he did with his dad, "Standard Time Vol. 3" I think. It's the one where they do an absolutely stunning "Where or When."

(After typing that, I did a Google search to make sure I was ID'ing the right record and clicked the link to the official Marsalis website. The page has a self-congratulatory blurb describing the album, and (as an addled bonus) a reprint of Stanley Crouch's liner notes. Make of that what you will, but there've been better ways to start a morning....)

Sound of Silence.

Which also doubles as the best Simon a& Garfunkel song. Very efficient, Allen. I also didn't vote, as my favorite is "Live at Blues Alley". Have found him basically pompous (to varying degrees) on every release I've heard since that one. I like his initial work with Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers quite a bit, and think how different it could have all been if he hadn't become so "important". I did like his contributions to the Ken Burns Jazz series, and liked that series, admitted glaring flaws and all.
