I'm with Eric.  I mean I know I don't ever want to have a beer with Weizy or Berigan, but enemies?  Nah!

This is not meant as an argument with Lon. I'm using his words only to present some discussion.

'Tis difficult to know what a person would think of another, till the people meet. One of my best 'real world' friends is the direct opposite of me, politically. He posts his political thoughts on another Board. He was my friend before I read his posts. If I'd read his posts before he was my friend, I'd have vowed to NEVER meet the sonofabitch. It's humorous that he and I are very good friends and go in opposite directions, politically.

I have ideas of who I might like to meet from reading posts on this Board. I wonder how accurate my ideas would be if I met said Organissimo posters? Methinks there is a possibility I might dislike those I believe I would like and vice versa.

FWIW, I don't look at the political or religious threads.

Not what I'm here for.

I'm one of those guys that grew up reading the milk carton every morning over his bowl of cereal...if it's there, I'll read it!

As far as meeting other posters, I can only think of one person I've seen here that I would definitely not want to meet under any circumstance. Fortunately, I figure all I have to do is avoid SACDs in music stores and I'll be safe.

Okay, make that two, but I don't meet too many shirtless drummers anyway... :g

And I notice that I haven't been able to sell anything on the Offering and Looking For forum since I started posting in Politics - well maybe that's the proof.

The one thing I cannot imagine on this board is anyone passing up a CD or LP they want because of any disagreement on any thread. Heck, I've even dealt with Conn, and you know what an asshole he is! ;)

and getting money out of Moose is like getting....water out of a log!

I'm not here for political or religious threads, either. But, I do look at them, sometimes even more than the music discussions.

From my perspective, I find it interesting that there are quite a few liberal, non-Christian fans of jazz on this board. In this part of the country, there seems to be a very small minority of people fitting even one of these categories, let alone all three. It's comforting to know I'm not the only one! This isn't meant to be disrespectful to conservative or religious people on the board, as political and religious viewpoints should be irrelevant when discussing jazz.

FWIW, the generally high level of civility on this board continues to amaze me. Considering some of the topics discussed here, I'd say things could be a lot worse.

Speaking of meeting other posters, I really need to go visit that bag of hot air that lives only 20 minutes north of here. I need to buy that AEC box set, and maybe I'll give him a little pat on the head, too. ;)

Wes, maybe I'll just qualify my statement by saying that I am very much an introvert and I don't feel the urge to hang with many people at all as an extrovert might. I have a limited amount of time I can hang with other people, and an even more limited time that I can hang with other people that my wife is not interested in being around.

AND I may be deceiving myself but I believe I have become pretty good over the last few decades at deciphering who I would or would not be compatible with, and I pursue compatibility not just "hey let's find out." (Time factor there again).

To put things in perspective: not that many weeks ago I was not at all far away from Rolf (Weizy) in Arlington, a phone call probably could have been all it took to meet somewhere just minutes away (assuming he had any interest in meeting me, an assumption I'm NOT making). . . . I didn't make any phone calls.

But he's not an enemy. I just don't choose to seek to "get to know him" better in person.

don't get me wrong, i love this place, but recent events got me thinking about that classic, "The Prince."

if Machiavelli were around today he would probably write that with respect to forums such as ours idea that theological and moral imperatives have no place there.

"It must be understood," Machiavelli avers, "that a prince ... cannot observe all of those virtues for which men are reputed good, because it is often necessary to act against mercy, against faith, against humanity, against frankness, against religion, in order to preserve the state."

:w

I think you've discovered the Neo-Con bible.

difference: Machiavelli set a course with which to be a benevolant dictator. The neo-cons want to be ruled with an iron fist. Well, an iron fist that won't tax them, anyway...

No, Machiavelli advised doing smart ruthless things. If Machiavelli is their bible that don't read any too good.
