Guest akanalog Posted March 20, 2005 Report Posted March 20, 2005 i have heard the thornton disc and i like it. is anything else in the series like this one? i like the thornton because it is a little out but the music is still held down by some steady grooving basslines. things never get out of control but it still has a nice edge. i enjoy the frank wright also but this is about as out as i want to get. i always enjoy hearing musicians i like in new setting so it was cool hearing art taylor do something different on this one. anything else in the series around this level? some of the others look interesting but i fear they will blow me out of the room. the bley interests me just because of my enjoyment of electric instruments but bley is not someone i generally enjoy so much plugged in. but yeah, anything around the thornton to wright level? thank you. clifford_thornton Posted March 20, 2005 Report Posted March 20, 2005 (edited) The Shepp that John B skipped, and both "Certain Blacks" and "with Fontella Bass" from the AEC would fit that bill nicely. The Rudd is pretty straight-ahead, too. The Shorter and the Lacys are probably the most 'out,' but not much more so than the Wright... And yes, Jazzbo, I did see the ESPs. Guest akanalog Posted March 21, 2005 Report Posted March 21, 2005 the shepp and the AEC albums didn't really appeal to me much. i don't know why. i guess i have never really been interested in AEC albums. they don't move me. and the shepp looks like sort of a mess and i hate harmonica. well, hmmmm....i guess perhaps i should avoid this series of reissues. or i guess i will take a few risks. I listened to the Emergency and the Frank Wright discs 3 times each while I was painting the downstairs. Tremendous. I love them both and if I had to pick a favorite I would say the Emergency disc just by a hair. Thanks for the recommendations. Quote

Well, after you take the outer wrap off, you'll have no info on the front cover. I suppose that's OK in some circumstances - the artwork itself looks good, but it just doesn't work for me from a practical point of view...and wait til you get to the booklets! Well, now at least 15 of 'em are here and quite available. With an apparent 5,000 per unit limit -- let me say at this juncture: "What are you waitin' for, buckeroos -- saddle up and git yer asses in gear!" By year end, please don't fill this topic thread with how you mighta, coulda, woulda, shoulda... And forget the prospect of copping promos or cut-outs on the cheap. Quote
