ejp626
I didn't realize the J & R prices were so good, but I did pick up the Shepp and Thornton CDs at Dusty Groove the other day. Definitely enjoying them. I really shouldn't get any more, but I may falter...
Guest akanalog
i have heard the thornton disc and i like it. is anything else in the series like this one? i like the thornton because it is a little out but the music is still held down by some steady grooving basslines. things never get out of control but it still has a nice edge. i enjoy the frank wright also but this is about as out as i want to get. i always enjoy hearing musicians i like in new setting so it was cool hearing art taylor do something different on this one. anything else in the series around this level? some of the others look interesting but i fear they will blow me out of the room. the bley interests me just because of my enjoyment of electric instruments but bley is not someone i generally enjoy so much plugged in. but yeah, anything around the thornton to wright level? thank you. clifford_thornton
The Shepp that John B skipped, and both "Certain Blacks" and "with Fontella Bass" from the AEC would fit that bill nicely. The Rudd is pretty straight-ahead, too. The Shorter and the Lacys are probably the most 'out,' but not much more so than the Wright... And yes, Jazzbo, I did see the ESPs. Ellis Marsalis kinda threw me for a loop, but the Ayler and Ra stuff sounds great! Edited March 20, 2005 by clifford_thornton
Guest akanalog
the shepp and the AEC albums didn't really appeal to me much. i don't know why. i guess i have never really been interested in AEC albums. they don't move me. and the shepp looks like sort of a mess and i hate harmonica. well, hmmmm....i guess perhaps i should avoid this series of reissues. or i guess i will take a few risks. clifford_thornton
or i guess i will take a few risks. I think that's the ticket... the Rudd is a really nice record, like the New York Art Quartet on ESP only more traditionally arranged. Chalupa
My DeepDiscountCD order arrived today. I listened to the Emergency and the Frank Wright discs 3 times each while I was painting the downstairs. Tremendous. I love them both and if I had to pick a favorite I would say the Emergency disc just by a hair. Thanks for the recommendations.
clifford_thornton
Could somebody give me a track listing on the Wright and the Emergency? I'm reviewing both but going from my vinyl copies. Want to make sure there aren't any takes I'm missing... Thanks! CT
bertrand
I'm surprised you didn't order the AEC's 'Music To Paint The Downstairs By'. It's a super-rarity that even Chuck Nessa has never heard of. Bertrand.

Guest akanalog
the emergency album sort of reminds me of some of wayne shorter's later blue note albums.
alankin
Y'know, I always liked the original covers, but now seeing the reissues and their splotchy funk in the stores, they actually do look really nice. Well, after you take the outer wrap off, you'll have no info on the front cover. I suppose that's OK in some circumstances - the artwork itself looks good, but it just doesn't work for me from a practical point of view...and wait til you get to the booklets! Here, tell me which titles are these by looking at the covers: Check the spines. Edited March 22, 2005 by alankin
alankin
I "pre-ordered" 9 of 'em from cduniverse, checked tonight and see all 3 Art Ensembles and the Frank Wright are backordered. Got an email from CDUniverse over the weekend the my back-ordered Free America titles are in stock. Chuck Nessa
I watched my "in stock" items dwindle until Sunday when only 2 weren't backordered - and the Braxton dbl was listed as last copy. I cancelled the order and reordered from J&R.

Bill Nelson
Today I ordered 5 of the 15 available from Dusty Groove at $16.99 each: Clifford Thornton - Panther & the Lash Anthony Braxton - Donna Lee Emergency - Homage To Peace Roswell Rudd - same Frank Wright - Uhuru Na Umoja More than half of the initial pages on this thread have dealt with the high cost ($24.99) of imports and relative Stateside unavailability of these limited edition CDs. Well, now at least 15 of 'em are here and quite available. With an apparent 5,000 per unit limit -- let me say at this juncture: "What are you waitin' for, buckeroos -- saddle up and git yer asses in gear!" By year end, please don't fill this topic thread with how you mighta, coulda, woulda, shoulda... And forget the prospect of copping promos or cut-outs on the cheap. Adam
5000? They won't sell out for 2 years at least.
Chuck Nessa
AFAIK, it is 5000 worldwide - the US supply is 1000 each.

Adam
AFAIK, it is 5000 worldwide - the US supply is 1000 each. My recollection is that most of those other Verve limited release CDs (whatever that series was called) were also 5000 worldwide each, and those were all available for quite some time (except that Marquis de Sade Lalo Schifrin). But heck I just bought the Waldron/Lacy and Burrell, and soon I'll get the Art Endemble and Clifford Thornton discs.

It is my understanding 2500 were available in Europe, 1000 for the US and the balance for the rest of the world.
bertrand
5 copies of each title were earmarked for the Vatican. I doubt they sold. Bertrand.
