Ellington, for genius and dignity.

Art Pepper, for the capabilities of honesty and self-criticism.

Armstrong for genius and humanity.

Ruby Braff for steadfastness and "robustness."

Lester Young for sublimnity.

Tom Harrell, cause he can just touch me (even before I knew his story).

David,

What a band that would be! ^_^

Can you imagine it? A front line of Trane & Woody with Tapscott or Weston...or both.

Rounding out the band, I'd have to go with Mingus and Tony Williams or Max Roach.

I can almost hear their verion of "Impressions".

Actually, David, that group as it was with Horace AND Randy on piano under the horns. . . that would be something to hear! ^_^

I can't argue with that.

Rather sad that three of the four died in their primes so prematurely with lots of music and ideas yet to be explored.

Hard to choose a short list, but I guess Pops, Bird and Trane have influenced me more than any others. But I like zillions. I remember a guy calling me nuts when I was about 20 because he thought that I liked too many musicians. But there are a lot of good ones!
