Man with the Golden Arm Posted May 22, 2003 Report Posted May 22, 2003 (edited) Heard some cuts on a local retro jazz show the other day. The artist was the so called Queen of the Boogie Woogie. The one cut was one of those typical double entendre boogies that had something to do with 'cooking'? The other couple were instumentals and they were unbelievable. All the hints I have. Can someone help me out?? Thanks. Edited May 22, 2003 by Man with the Golden Arm Quote
jazzbo Posted May 22, 2003 Report Posted May 22, 2003 (edited) There are many claims to that queenly crown. Could this have been Hadda Brooks? Edited May 22, 2003 by jazzbo Quote
Man with the Golden Arm Posted May 22, 2003 Author Report Posted May 22, 2003 (edited) No Lon, not her. Give it another try. I know you will know. Maybe Queen' was too clean of a term for her? She evidently only recorded a spit of stuff. Supposedly it's all on one Classics Records CD. All I recall from the show. Edited May 22, 2003 by Man with the Golden Arm Quote
Swinging Swede Posted May 22, 2003 Report Posted May 22, 2003 Did they say that it was on Classics Records? Must be this then: One of the tunes is called Cook That Stuff, and might be the one you heard. I intend to pick up this one myself one day. Quote
jazzbo Posted May 22, 2003 Report Posted May 22, 2003 Hmm. . . that could be it. Need to consider that one myself! Quote
Man with the Golden Arm Posted May 22, 2003 Author Report Posted May 22, 2003 That's HER! My daughter, who's in her second year of piano, was very hip to it. Some hot stuff there. The show, which I don't listen to all that much, is Ray Smith's "Jazz Decades". At times he surprises ya with something like this. Looking closely at the cover posted I can see that bounce was a bit of Krupa. Thanks y'all. Quote
Christiern Posted May 23, 2003 Report Posted May 23, 2003 (edited) Well, there's Hazel Scott (she boogied with Adam Clayton Powell) and, in England, there was Winifred Atwell. Edited May 24, 2003 by Christiern Quote
Steve Gray Posted May 24, 2003 Report Posted May 24, 2003 Add Camille Howard to the list, who played with Roy Milton Quote
