connoisseur series500 Posted September 21, 2004 Report Posted September 21, 2004 this oughta make me feel good: I'm sure many of our posters have larger collections than mine. "See, I don't go overboard on my buying..." I haven't exactly counted, but I've got close to 700 cds. They're all good though... Lots of hard to find stuff along with in-print ones. I have drawn a line in the sand several times in regards to buying cds. In the end, I keep buying them. At least I sell them too. Helps keep the collection manageable. B-) Quote
wesbed Posted September 21, 2004 Report Posted September 21, 2004 Whew! I have more CDs than a I can organize. More CDs than I've counted in several years. I don't know... errr, between two and four thousand? Gulp. Quote
GregK Posted September 21, 2004 Report Posted September 21, 2004 my answer is, "nowhere near enough". I last counted in 1998, and there were about 1500 then (although that includes non-jazz), and I was still a grad student then. With a regular, good income now, I've only bought many, many more CDs, and about 90% of those have been jazz. Probably over 2000 now? I have no idea Do we count all the discs in a box set as individual CDs? Or is the box counted as one? Quote
connoisseur series500 Posted September 21, 2004 Author Report Posted September 21, 2004 Gulp. gulp..... Quote
connoisseur series500 Posted September 21, 2004 Author Report Posted September 21, 2004 Man, do you guys ever get rid of anything? I've probably sold around 300 cds (as a guess.) Quote
gdogus Posted September 21, 2004 Report Posted September 21, 2004 A mere 315 releases (sez my spreadsheet list), but that includes a lot of multi-disc sets. I am in control...I am in control... Quote
dsgtrane Posted September 21, 2004 Report Posted September 21, 2004 Including live CDRs and CDRs of LPs I've got over 5000 all tolled. Over 80% of it is jazz. Quote

Chuck Nessa Posted September 21, 2004 Report Posted September 21, 2004 I own all of my jazz cds. Is someone feeling guilty about their collection? Quote
connoisseur series500 Posted September 21, 2004 Author Report Posted September 21, 2004 all tolled "tolled" alright. Quote

I plan to be buried with all my unlistened to CDs. At least they'll keep my coffin down in case of flooding. Quote
BruceH Posted September 21, 2004 Report Posted September 21, 2004 Too many. But I've listened to them all at least once! Quote
BeBop Posted September 21, 2004 Report Posted September 21, 2004 Enough that I quit buying years ago. Quote
dsgtrane Posted September 21, 2004 Report Posted September 21, 2004 (edited) do you guys ever get rid of anything? Pretty rarely. What I don't like today I may like at some time in the future. Late Coltrane is a good example. There have been a few that I've hated so badly that I got rid of immediately. McCoy Tyner's "What The World Needs Now" was one, despite my being a huge McCoy fan. Much too syruppy for my liking. Edited September 21, 2004 by dsgtrane Quote

Tjazz Posted September 21, 2004 Report Posted September 21, 2004 I own all of my jazz cds. Is someone feeling guilty about their collection? What about promos? Quote
GregK Posted September 21, 2004 Report Posted September 21, 2004 I've gotten rid of some, but always as part of a trade for something else. I never found Dave Holland Not for Nothing very interesting, so that became part of a trade for the Coltrane live in Europe box. Quote
Upright Bill Posted September 21, 2004 Report Posted September 21, 2004 As of last Friday I had finally gotten to 0. That is the number of Jazz CDs that I own and have NOT listened to. As of today I am at 2. Quote
Jazzmoose Posted September 21, 2004 Report Posted September 21, 2004 My collection is probably about the size of yours, Paul, but I have noticed that no matter how big my collection gets, the want list always stays about twice as big as the collection... Quote
Christiern Posted September 21, 2004 Report Posted September 21, 2004 I have had close to 5000 CD stolen from me by a crack addict, including some of my favorite boxed sets. So I am down to 5 or 6000, but--except for the odd one that somehow escaped their fingers--all my Bird, Trane, Duke, Louis, Billie, Sarah, Basie, Jelly Roll, Waller discs are gone. Quote

Jazzmoose Posted September 21, 2004 Report Posted September 21, 2004 Ouch! Now that's a depressing post!! Quote
Noj Posted September 21, 2004 Report Posted September 21, 2004 I friend of mine had some dope fiend break in his place and make off with about 500 DVDs. We assume it was a crackhead because that's all he took, he could have taken loads of expensive audio equipment. The DVDs are an easy trade for cash. 5000 cds would really be devastating. Quote
