Chrome Posted September 20, 2004 Report Posted September 20, 2004 Can anyone provide any input on two Eric Dolphy discs: Iron Man and Conversations? They're on sale at the Jazz Record Mart, and I'm tempted. All I have of Dolphy is Out to Lunch (of course) and The Quest w/Mal Waldron, but I like that stuff a lot. Quote
sal Posted September 20, 2004 Report Posted September 20, 2004 Both are essential. Make sure you're getting the Fuel 2000 reissues though. I think there's like 3 different versions of "Iron Man" going around. Quote
AmirBagachelles Posted September 20, 2004 Report Posted September 20, 2004 The "new" Fresh Sound editions at least have the decency to steal/license the original artwork, which was pretty catchy. Anybody know any sordid details regarding the chain of custody of the original tapes? These are great records, got me going on a nice Sonny Simmons jag for a stretch too. Quote
P.D. Posted September 20, 2004 Report Posted September 20, 2004 These were originally made for the Douglas label ( I believe), but seem to be somehow in the " public domain" from the variety of bootlegs etc that have and do exist. Excellent Dolphy though and necessary if you are into Eric. I think there were 9 tracks in total from these sessions.. some of the issues collide with each other, and some erroniouslyclaim unissued tracks to be included that most often are Stormy Weather from a Mingus date, and some Chico Hamilton tracks. The latter sound way out of place when tacked onto the Iron Man / Music Matador sets. Quote
Humbert Humbert Posted September 20, 2004 Report Posted September 20, 2004 I tell you what, I would buy Iron Man if Come Sunday were the only track. That duet between Dolphy on bass clarinet and Richard Davis is perhaps one of the most beautiful recordings I've ever heard. Andrew Quote
Humbert Humbert Posted September 20, 2004 Report Posted September 20, 2004 ...and the rest isn't too bad either. Quote

street singer Posted September 21, 2004 Report Posted September 21, 2004 So which version of these albums is generally regarded as "the one" to get? Is it the Fuel version, as previously stated? Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted September 21, 2004 Report Posted September 21, 2004 accept the previous message. has anyone offered a rebutal? Quote
Humbert Humbert Posted September 21, 2004 Report Posted September 21, 2004 Is it like that fabulous one on "Out To Lunch"? Well, just let me say this: If Come Sunday were not on Iron Man, I would much prefer listening to Out to Lunch, and I'd probably never even bother picking up Iron Man. But seeing as how it is, Iron Man gets to see a whole lot more of the inside of my CD player than does Out to Lunch. Come Sunday never fails to make me cry. Andrew Quote
robviti Posted September 21, 2004 Report Posted September 21, 2004 (edited) Has anyone purchased the recent Lonehill Jazz reissue Eric Dolphy: Complete Memorial Album Sessions? It features all nine tracks originally released on Iron Man and Conversations on one cd. Currently, I own Music Matador on LeJazz which only has some of the tracks from the original recordings. Btw, Dusty Groove has both Iron Man and Conversations on sale for 5.99 and 6.99 respectively (the bastards ). The Lonehill reissue is 11.99, but is currently out of stock. Alone Together 7. Come Sunday 8. Ode To C.P. 9. Love Me is anything missing? p.s. now i'm a supa groover? do i have to go out and buy different clothes? Edited September 21, 2004 by jazzshrink Quote
Chrome Posted September 21, 2004 Author Report Posted September 21, 2004 (edited) I appreciate all this input ... regarding which versions to get, does anyone have an opinion on the Restless discs? Those happen to be the ones on sale at the JRM. How big of a difference is there between the Fuel discs and these? Or is Restless one of those "bad" labels? Edited September 21, 2004 by Chrome Quote
David Ayers Posted September 21, 2004 Report Posted September 21, 2004 is anything missing? I can't remember. p.s. now i'm a supa groover? do i have to go out and buy different clothes? Yes. Quote
B. Goren. Posted September 21, 2004 Report Posted September 21, 2004 Dolphy's performance of Jitterbug Waltz is another good reason to buy this CD. Quote
Nate Dorward Posted September 21, 2004 Report Posted September 21, 2004 There are rumours that much more material exists from these sessions--they were recorded over 3 days--but I guess with all the questionable issues & confusion it's anybody's guess who's got the original tapes or if a "proper" issue will ever be made. I have only the Iron Man session, on West Wind (another dodgy label). It's wonderful stuff. Much of the material is familiar from the Vintage Dolphy live stuff with Armour, but all the titles are different. Quote
JSngry Posted September 21, 2004 Report Posted September 21, 2004 There was a Casablanca 2-LP set that had everything. Worth looking for afaic. Quote
Geoff Posted September 22, 2004 Report Posted September 22, 2004 I prefer Conversations, but both are excellent and even essential. Quote
DrJ Posted September 23, 2004 Report Posted September 23, 2004 If you like Dolphy, you gotta have 'em. Too bad the sonics aren't a little better but the quality of the music trumps any such reservations ANY day. Quote
Ken Dryden Posted April 24, 2009 Report Posted April 24, 2009 One Eric Dolphy CD to avoid is Wherever I Go, a cheesy boot compilation of previously issued material likely dubbed from LPs. Avoid it at any price. Quote
