Dmitry Posted September 19, 2004 Report Posted September 19, 2004 I've seen some Prestige Lps with a Status logo floating around eBay from time to time. It looks like Status is a sticker, not part of the printed cover. Anyone have an explanation? Thanks. Quote
sidewinder Posted September 19, 2004 Report Posted September 19, 2004 Wasn't 'Status' a Prestige budget line put out in the mid to late 60s, usually on thinner vinyl? Looks like what is on the picture is a Status sleeve with New Jazz vinyl, sort of like a Prestige version of a 'Liberty/NY USA' combo. Quote
Peter A Posted September 19, 2004 Report Posted September 19, 2004 The later titles of the New Jazz series were issued in the early sixties on the STATUS label, for instance: Ahmed Abdul-Malik - Spellbound (8304) and Red Garland - Sugan (8305). However, they continued the numbering of the New Jazz series. I think Prestige sold their old stock New Jazz LP's with the STATUS stickers (or with reprinted covers with STATUS) during the early sixties. Quote
Jim R Posted September 20, 2004 Report Posted September 20, 2004 SUGAN (actually 8304... SPELLBOUND was 8303) was issued on NJ in '63, and on Status in '65, I believe. As far as I know, there were about 25 titles issued on Status, from the aforementioned 8303 up to the Coltrane/Wess WHEELIN' AND DEALIN' (8327). Most were reissues of Prestige and NJ, but there were a couple of reissues of Tru-Sound, and Moodsville albums. SUGAN is kind of an odd duck. Besides being reissued on a different label, it's never been clear to me whose date that was. Some books say "Red Garland with Phil Woods", others say "Phil Woods with Red Garland"; and the Prestige discography lists it as the former in the index, while it's listed as the latter in the main discography section. Fantasy lists it under Woods' name in their catalog. The cover makes it appear more like Woods was the leader: Quote
GA Russell Posted September 21, 2004 Report Posted September 21, 2004 My copy of Herbie Mann's Flute Souffle is a Status, with a Prestige catalogue number. The logo appears like any other would, not a sticker or a redrawing. The album cover is a basic red, unlike that of the CD, which is basic white. I purchased it in 1969, when stores were clearing out their mono albums. The record itself has Prestige labels on both sides. I've never noticed any difference in the thickness. Quote
