montg Posted September 18, 2004 Report Posted September 18, 2004 I've heard positive things about her work over the years, but so far, for whatever reason, I haven't bought anything. Any suggestions about where to start would be appreciated. Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted September 18, 2004 Report Posted September 18, 2004 Any of her solo albums would be a good entry point. Unfortunately the earlier ones are out of print. Your decision might consider whether you prefer large or small group music. She's got examples of big band, strings, quintet, quartet, trio, solo - stuff with vocals, stuff with percussion - a lot of variety. But I think if you like one record, you'll like the rest. Please see the Renee Rosnes discography on my website. Mike Quote
montg Posted September 18, 2004 Author Report Posted September 18, 2004 Your decision might consider whether you prefer large or small group music. Good point..I usually prefer quintets or midsize groups but, of course, enjoy the full range (trio to Big Band--not much for solo piano albums.) Thanks, Mike, I'll check out the discography. Quote
B. Goren. Posted September 18, 2004 Report Posted September 18, 2004 Take a look here. As We Are Now is a very good one. Criss Potter is another good reason to listen to it. Quote
robviti Posted September 18, 2004 Report Posted September 18, 2004 i agree that as we are now is a good place to start. although it is oop, it's easy to find. there are sealed copies on half.com for about $8, and this disc is listed on ebay quite often. Quote

Eric Posted September 18, 2004 Report Posted September 18, 2004 (edited) I have yet to hear one I did not enjoy. There is an OOP trio with strings record - can't recall the name offhand - that I think is super (and I usually cannot get on with that sort of thing). Edit - It is called "Without Words" Edited September 18, 2004 by Eric Quote
jazzmessenger Posted September 18, 2004 Report Posted September 18, 2004 If you like trio recordings, "When You Wish Upon A Star" (32 Jazz) by the Drummonds (Renee Rosnes, Ray Drummond and Billy Drummond) is a good place to start. Quote
Free For All Posted September 18, 2004 Report Posted September 18, 2004 BTW, just for the record, she pronounces her name REE-nee (long e sounds, rhythms with "beanie") not rah-NAY. In case you were wondering. Quote
marcoliv Posted September 18, 2004 Report Posted September 18, 2004 she is not the leader but it´s a great disc: Native Colours - One World released by Concord Marcus Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted September 18, 2004 Report Posted September 18, 2004 Take a look here. As We Are Now is a very good one. Criss Potter is another good reason to listen to it. FYI, the link referred to here is Renee's own homepage and if you look at most of the titles, you'll see an "Order now for Jazz Cares" button. Click this and buy the CDs directly from Renee. You'll not only get an autographed copy of the CD, you'll be making a donation to a great charity, The Jazz Musicians Emergency Fund. Myself, I buy them direct because I dig getting them signed. FYI, "As We Are Now" is very nice but don't overlook some awesome Joe Henderson on "For the Moment". Chris Potter or Joe Henderson... you make the call. Later, Kevin Quote
Ed S Posted September 20, 2004 Report Posted September 20, 2004 I've got all of Renee's Blue Notes and have not been disappointed. Her recent release with the Danish Radio Big Band is nice. Quote
jazzbo Posted September 20, 2004 Report Posted September 20, 2004 I agree with Eric, I have yet to hear one that I don't enjoy. I guess Without Words and For the Moment get the most play in my listening world. . . . Quote
Peter Johnson Posted September 20, 2004 Report Posted September 20, 2004 FYI, she and her quartet will be at the Village Vanguard in NYC November 16-21, the week before Poppa Lou & company! See here for details. Quote
bertrand Posted September 20, 2004 Report Posted September 20, 2004 I loved her first album. The duet track with Wayne, and the duet with Herbie are gorgeous. Bertrand. Quote
jazzbo Posted September 20, 2004 Report Posted September 20, 2004 Hmmmm. . .my least favorite parts of that album! Go figure. This one is highly recommended too: she does a stunning turn as a sidewoman: Quote
montg Posted September 20, 2004 Author Report Posted September 20, 2004 Thanks for the input--sounds like I can't go wrong. I'll start with one or two of the mid 90s Blue Notes and go on from there. Quote
king ubu Posted September 23, 2004 Report Posted September 23, 2004 Currently spinning "Art & Soul" love it! The opening track, Ornette's 11+1/2 bar "Blues Connotation" is great, and "African Flower".... wow! Othen than that I only have "Life on Earth" so far. I didn't know her discs are so easy to find, they never ever pop up here, neither new nor used. ubu Quote
