Leeway Posted September 14, 2004 Report Posted September 14, 2004 From the new (Oct. 04) issue of "Downbeat": Mosaic is preparing an 8 CD set called the "Columbia Small Group Swing Sessions." It consists of 1950s recordings by Illinois Jacquet, Buck Clayton, Ruby Braff, Herb Ellis, Ben Webster, and Coleman Hawkins." First I've heard of this set. Sounds like a "must-have" set! Quote
Jazzmoose Posted September 15, 2004 Report Posted September 15, 2004 Oh, yeah...I'm normally a "running low" shopper having only preordered one Mosiac to date. I have a feeling there's a second one on the way... Quote

Excellent news! This one's actually been on the drawing board for a long time, sort of like the Capitol Big Band box... I first saw mention of it about 5-6 years ago & wondered if it was still in the works. Hah chah! Quote
wolff Posted September 15, 2004 Report Posted September 15, 2004 I'm gonna wait for the Verve Small Group Swing Sessions set. I hear it will include Webster, Hawkins, DeFranko and Tatum among others. Quote
Matthew Posted September 15, 2004 Report Posted September 15, 2004 Oh, please let this be true! Quote
brownie Posted September 15, 2004 Report Posted September 15, 2004 That Columbia Swing Sessions looks more like an Epic Swing Sessions. From the list of participants, many (Braff, Jacquet, Ellis...) recorded for Epic, one of the Columbia labels! Quote

I think it will be about 50 / 50 The Clayton should be the Songs for Swingers period... long overdue in a good CD issue. Hawk and Clark Terry, another that hasn't been ob CD ( unless in Japan) and the Webster / Sweets which Columbia did a "Jazz Masterpieces" issue Quote
neveronfriday Posted September 15, 2004 Report Posted September 15, 2004 I think it is time to add Mosaic to the "Bastards" list. You've got my vote. Cheers! Quote
Stan C Posted September 15, 2004 Report Posted September 15, 2004 Great news! I also was wondering about the Columbia Swing Sessions as it was mentioned as a possible set and it looks like a real winner. Quote
desertblues Posted September 15, 2004 Report Posted September 15, 2004 THE MERCILESS BASTARDS! (bring it on!) Quote
David McFarlane Posted September 16, 2004 Report Posted September 16, 2004 This is great news! I'm a real fan of Mosaic's "multi-artist" releases (Classic Capitol Jazz and H.R.S. and Atlantic New Orleans Jazz, in particular). I keep complete CDR sets of the first two in my desk at work so I can enjoy the variety. This set of swing sessions could be my first pre-order! Quote
Don Brown Posted September 16, 2004 Report Posted September 16, 2004 It'll be a real treat to finally get Buck Clayton's "Songs for Swingers" on CD. Does anyone know if Sir Charles Thompson's "Swing Organ" or Marlowe Morris' "Play the Thing" are included? They were a couple of fine albums that seem to have been completely forgotten. Quote
ghost of miles Posted September 16, 2004 Report Posted September 16, 2004 Is there an estimated release date for this beauty? Quote

I was only making an assumption here, but Songs for Swingers should be included in a title like this, plus the list of artists that were given. Quote

But there are enough that I haven't heard that I'll want this one eventually. Anyone know if the Ben and Sweets album has alternates or unissued material? Quote
Matthew Posted September 16, 2004 Report Posted September 16, 2004 Seems as if there should be some other material on this set. The time for these 12 lps don't appear to add up to 8 cds. Still, this'll be a pre-order set, for sure. Quote
montg Posted September 16, 2004 Report Posted September 16, 2004 Is there an estimated release date for this beauty I think this is supposed to be issued in Janurary. I heard from Scott, I believe, that there's a whole CD worth of unreleased Ruby Braff. I can't wait for this set!!! Quote
Brad Posted September 17, 2004 Report Posted September 17, 2004 Sounds pretty cool. I only have the Jacquet so it'll be an order for me. Quote
montg Posted September 17, 2004 Report Posted September 17, 2004 I'm not really familiar with Marlow Morris--does anyone know who's on the quintet album ("Play the Thing")? Quote
