Thoughts: This has been reissued more times than anything else in my collection. Without even trying, I would guess I've accumulated ten versions of most of the concert. It's fine stuff; something of a period piece, as this was one of several concerts/series of concerts that popped up to mimic or take advantage of the JATP phenomenon. But Dex and Wardell were a great pair. Special.

You'll want to ensure you're getting the most complete transcriptions possible, as many were severely and crudely edited to excise various solos, for instance.

Savoy is reissuing this so I hope the transfers are good. I probably have these in a few versions but I need to check to be sure. Might be a worthwhile pickup.

I have the three "Jazz Concert West Coast" cds that Savoy/Denon released a decade back. . . . my guess is they'll have found somthing new to add to this stew. . . (?)

THIS CONCERT IS HELLA GOOD. I LOVE THAT CD. I NEED MOST OF THOSE SONGS FROM THAT SET. THE CD I HAVE IS JAZZ WEST COAST VOL 2 FEATURING CHEROKEE AND BYAS A DRINK (PHAT). I HAVE THE DEX PROPER SET WHICH HAS DISORDER AT THE BOARDER AND A FEW OTHERS I BELIEVE---WARDELL SOUNDS SO GODAMN SOULFUL ON BYAS A DRINK

On the other hand, if Keepnews is still in charge of their reissues-----SOMETHING WILL BE MISSING.

I'm still pissed about the Mobley/Byrd/ Morgan Hard Bop package.

What's the problem with Keepnews, anyway? Isn't it in his interest to do a GOOD job?

I just received the Bopland set. I've only heard a part of the first disc on my PC; sounds pretty good so far.

Reissue was produced by Dan Marx; notes by Maxine Gordon. (Keepnews isn't mention.)

Notes as posted on Jazzmatazz:

-- July 6, 1947 Los Angeles concert with Wardell Gray, Howard Mcghee, Sonny Criss, a.o.

-- researched and annotated by Maxine Gordon

-- reissue produced by Dan Mark; engineering by Paul Reid III

-- music transferred from the original 16" transcription acetates; pitch corrected

-- includes about 25 minutes of previously unreleased music

-- groups included the Howard McGhee Orchestra, the Bill Moore Orchestra,

the Bopland Boys and the Al Killian Orchestra

-- other musicians include Trummy Young, Hampton Hawes, Russ Freeman,

Barney Kessel, Red Callender, Roy Porter

I've updated and added times to the track listings:

DISC 1:

1. Tune-up/announcement - 2'44

2. Bopera (aka Disorder at the Border) 19'18

3. What Is This Thing Called Love? 13'35

5. Back Breaker 16'22

DISC 2:

1. Tune-up/announcement - 2'09

2. Bopland (aka Byas-A-Drink) - 19'07

3. Bop After Hours (aka After Hours Bop) - 18'28 [part 4 (Red Callender bass solo) previously unreleased]

4. The Hunt (aka Rocks 'n' Shoals) - 18'08

DISC 3:

1. Perdido- 20'21 [parts 2 & 3 previously unreleased]

2. Merry Go Round Blues - 0'12 [previously unreleased]

3. Blowin' with Bass - 5'04 [previously unreleased]

4. Blow, Blow, Blow - 14'00

(And then there's The Complete Prestige Recordings, which I've just noticed have been listed on CD Universe, but that's for another discussion, I suppose.)

I really like this cd. Though not all the music is great it's a terrific evocation of an era.

Maxine Gordon's liner notes are fascinating but I'm not sure that this set should have been released under her late husband's name.

If anyone still argues that the boppers couldn't play the blues make them listen to Bop After Hours.

The revelation for me here is Barney Kessel: His solos are consistently great.

This is a fantastic reissue for those of us who don't already have it umpteen times (only a small duplication for me, with the edited down stuff on side 4 of the old LONG TALL DEXTER Savoy 2 LP set). Nice coincidence that I've just been rereading Ted Gioia's WEST COAST JAZZ lately, saw this in the store the day after I read the passages about this concert! Sound quality is better than I expected, although certainly not pristine. I'm most enjoying hearing more Wardell Gray, thus far my collection is light on his work.

Though I'll probably get dumped on by some members of this group for recommending it there's a real good Proper 4 cd box devoted to Wardell. (And it only costs about $20.)

At that price it's a steal! And, contrary to other Keepnews produced Savoy reissues, this really has all there is! A cornerstone of California bebop - you won't get any more or better 1940's Dexter or Wardell.

Yes, the Wild Bill Moore Orchestra is included.

To be more specific:

What Is This Thing Called Love (excerpts issued as Unfinished Bopera)

Perdido (excerpts issued as Wild Bill)

Merry Go Round Blues (unissued)

Blowin' For Bass (unissued)

Am just trying to make up my mind now if I'm going to make it hard on myself and listen to the music piecemeal (like they did way back...)
