Shrdlu
Gary McFarland's "America The Beautiful" is a very interesting album. It's a big band date, with a lot of the usual suspects, and not to be feared by those who don't like Gary's vocalese. There is a very cheap, but good-sounding, U.S. CD version (DCC Classics). It is perpetually available on eBay for peanuts, usually in tandem with another McFarland album, "Does The Sun Really Shine On The Moon", which I also like a lot. The Japanese CD will no doubt sound even better. "Today" has not been out on CD before, as far as I know, though LPs are easy to find. I'm looking forward to hearing that one. Son-of-a-Weizen
Thanks Hans.....I'm all over that new Mabern! He should be in NYC in a couple of weeks time playing at that Japanese-owned hotel w/jazz club (can't remember the name). Wish he'd come to D.C. Shrdlu
This is perhaps not exactly the right place to post this, but I really like the McFarland "Today" album. There are some very tasty sounds, especially some very Spanish-sounding acoustic guitar from Sam Brown (who also recorded with Bill Evans the same year, 1969), backed up by a very smooth percussion section. There's also a lot of Hubert Laws, and that can't be bad, plus Ron Carter, very prominent in the mix. No, it's not a hard-core jazz album, but I sure like it. Gary was a very talented arranger and musician. As I mentioned elsewhere, the CD was taken from vinyl, and it wasn't VG+ at the louder points. But the problems are not too serious, and you can still enjoy it all.
