JSngry Posted September 2, 2004 Report Posted September 2, 2004 File under one (which?) or both? Quote
couw Posted September 2, 2004 Report Posted September 2, 2004 I put them all under the "I" of Ibrahim. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted September 2, 2004 Report Posted September 2, 2004 Depends on which one ya got more of --- I'd file all of it under that one!! Quote
RDK Posted September 2, 2004 Report Posted September 2, 2004 If I were so organized that I actually had my jazz CDs and LPs filed alphabetically... I'd put them under "I" Quote
jazzbo Posted September 3, 2004 Report Posted September 3, 2004 To me. . .he was Dollar Brand first and I always think of him that way. . . . Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted September 3, 2004 Report Posted September 3, 2004 Since this is an "Existential Filing Quandry" I'd file it under "neath". Quote
charlesp Posted September 3, 2004 Report Posted September 3, 2004 Would your file a video of an early Mohammad Ali fight under Cassius Clay ?......I didn't think so. File the LPs/cds under Abdullah Ibrahim. Quote
Bill Nelson Posted September 3, 2004 Report Posted September 3, 2004 Otherwise, the quandary would extend to "Brand, Dollar". (But there's always the Dewey Decimal System!) Quote
JSngry Posted September 3, 2004 Author Report Posted September 3, 2004 (But there's always the Dewey Decimal System!) I'll file them under Dewey Redman! Quote
JSngry Posted September 3, 2004 Author Report Posted September 3, 2004 Would your file a video of an early Mohammad Ali fight under Cassius Clay ?......I didn't think so. File the LPs/cds under Abdullah Ibrahim. Good point, and almost convincing (might be yet), except... Does anybody talk about the "Ali-Liston fight"? "Ali-Foreman", sure. But it's still "Clay-Liston" whenever I hear about it. I've always filed Brand/Ibrahim's work under whatever name the album was issued under (not unlike Clay's/Ali's fights), but I'm beginning to accumulate enough of his work that I'm not sure if I can remember which album came out under which name. Of course, the "if it's not here, it must be there" rule is too simple, and is totally ungeekworthy. I'll probably put them all under Ibrahim eventually, but a crisis of this geektitude deserves careful consideration, no? Quote
RDK Posted September 3, 2004 Report Posted September 3, 2004 As an R.E.M. album once stated: File Under Water Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted September 3, 2004 Report Posted September 3, 2004 Hey Jim, where in the alphabet do you file Sonny Blount's recordings??? "B", "S", or "R"??? Quote
king ubu Posted September 3, 2004 Report Posted September 3, 2004 "I" - although he was Dollar Brand for me too, when I got to know him. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted September 3, 2004 Report Posted September 3, 2004 Hey Jim, where in the alphabet do you file Sonny Blount's recordings??? "B", "S", or "R"??? And Jim, where did/do you file 's recordings?? Still waiting on the Sonny Blount question too. Quote
king ubu Posted September 3, 2004 Report Posted September 3, 2004 Still waiting on the Sonny Blount question too. S here. Quote
JSngry Posted September 3, 2004 Author Report Posted September 3, 2004 Geez, can't a man get a good night's sleep while he's on vacation? "S" - there are no records that I have by "Sonny Blount", and "Sun Ra" is more a "title" than it is a name. Like if I had any records by The Chambers Brothers, I'd file them under C insteadd of B. Same thing with Chairman of the Board - C. Quote
paul secor Posted September 3, 2004 Report Posted September 3, 2004 I think of the Clay/Ali thing every time I see my Brand/Ibrahim recordings. I've got them filed under B, because that's where the first (Brand) ones were filed, and it's too confusing to have them in two places. Basically, I just said screw it. If I ever met Mr. Ibrahim, I'd call him by the name he prefers, but who cares (other than me) where my records are filed? Quote
Alexander Posted September 3, 2004 Report Posted September 3, 2004 Here's another one: Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf? Strangely enough, I file Muddy under "W" for Waters since I consider "Muddy Waters" to be McKinley Morganfeld's stage name rather than a "nick name." So the first name is Muddy and the last name is Waters. Wolf, however, I file under "H" for Howlin'. Quote
ejp626 Posted September 3, 2004 Report Posted September 3, 2004 How about the Pillar of Flame? I'm leaning toward F myself. Quote
tonym Posted September 3, 2004 Report Posted September 3, 2004 Still waiting on the Sonny Blount question too. File under 'H'. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted September 3, 2004 Report Posted September 3, 2004 This reminds me of something from the olden days. Cuscuna laughed out loud when he discovered I filed my Sonny Red lps under K. Quote
J.A.W. Posted September 3, 2004 Report Posted September 3, 2004 This reminds me of something from the olden days. Cuscuna laughed out loud when he discovered I filed my Sonny Red lps under K. Wasn't there a discography that also listed Sonny Red under his actual name? Quote
