mgraham333 Posted August 28, 2004 Report Posted August 28, 2004 By this time next month I'll be in my first house. I'd love to get suggestions from all of you as to the first CD that should be played. How about your overall FIRST and a first Blue Note if they are not one in the same. I review all the suggestions and then post the winner! Thanks Quote
Spontooneous Posted August 28, 2004 Report Posted August 28, 2004 It's perfectly obvious. Jimmy Smith's "House Party." ('Cause the Herbie Nichols cut "House Party Starting" is a little too reserved for celebratory purposes.) Quote
brownie Posted August 28, 2004 Report Posted August 28, 2004 Stick to Jimmy Smith! before 'House Party' you should have 'I'm Movin' On' and you could finish with 'Open House'. Not to forget 'Back at the Chicken Shack' Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted August 28, 2004 Report Posted August 28, 2004 You could completely depress yourself by playing a version of 'A House is not a Home'. Quote
Eric Posted August 28, 2004 Report Posted August 28, 2004 Great call on Jimmy Smith! I am going to suggest Coltrane - Giant Steps. No great metaphor, there, I just think of it as bold, cocky and more than ready for a new beginning! Quote
jazzbo Posted August 28, 2004 Report Posted August 28, 2004 Man, are you organized or what? I think the first thing that was played in my house came out of the first box of cds that was opened! Not planned in advance, and a gut choice from what was in that box. . . I think it was a T-Bone Walker cd. Quote
mgraham333 Posted August 29, 2004 Author Report Posted August 29, 2004 Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I like the Jimmy Smith idea, seems apropos. No stalkers please, but you're welcome to take a look. Quote
Free For All Posted August 29, 2004 Report Posted August 29, 2004 Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I like the Jimmy Smith idea, seems apropos. No stalkers please, but you're welcome to take a look. Yeah, Matt, NICE CRIB! Congratulations! That's about the beefiest mailbox I've ever seen! You a golfer? Enjoy your new home! Quote
mgraham333 Posted August 29, 2004 Author Report Posted August 29, 2004 Yeah, Matt, NICE CRIB! Congratulations! That's about the beefiest mailbox I've ever seen! You a golfer? Enjoy your new home! ...ummm son of a golfer... Dad played for Univ. Of Oklahoma team, won Big 8 Tournament. Needless to say those were big shoes....err...spikes...to fill. I've played a little over the years but don't have the patience required. I'm beginning to mellow just a bit though -_- With a nice course so close (though far enough away not to be bothered by errant golf balls) I'll likely pick up the clubs again and try the driving range. And if it doesn't go well........ I can always break my clubs over the mailbox Quote
BruceH Posted September 2, 2004 Report Posted September 2, 2004 I've never before seen a brick mailbox. Thanks. Quote
mgraham333 Posted September 2, 2004 Author Report Posted September 2, 2004 I've never before seen a brick mailbox. Thanks. Pretty common in these parts. Quote
mgraham333 Posted October 8, 2004 Author Report Posted October 8, 2004 I'm finally starting to get settled in my new house. There are still a lot of boxes that haven't been unpacked. I'm sure that will be the case for a while. I'm a little surprised in how long it took me to get my stereo hooked back up. I took my time and did a little better job of cable management than I have done in the past. It still largely resembles a plate of Spaghetti.... Anyway, either the fresh Monster cable that I used or the new room acoustics or a combination of both have made a major difference in the sound quality. I'm hearing subtle details in the music that I've never heard before. The very first track I played was title track of the Art Blakey RVG, Moanin' . For me, that song is the quintessential hard bop track. Just an amazing song. The entrances Morgan and Golson make are fabulous. I followed that with a little Joe Henderson and then as all of you suggested, Jimmy Smith's House Party. Alas, at a little after midnight it was a party of one. Quote
robviti Posted October 16, 2004 Report Posted October 16, 2004 (edited) well it ain't jazz, but if that were my new home, i'd honor it by blasting a certain hot funk tune from 1977. check out the clip: Matt's new crib Edited October 16, 2004 by jazzshrink Quote
Parkertown Posted October 17, 2004 Report Posted October 17, 2004 Wow! I used to live in Broken Arrow! That place sure looks nice; Broken Arrow is movin' on up. Quote
