Jazz Kat Posted March 27, 2005 Report Posted March 27, 2005 I'm going with my first ever Dex album, when I was about eight, bought it during one of my greatest summers ever, (jazz wise) Dexter Calling. Quote
Jazzdog Posted March 27, 2005 Report Posted March 27, 2005 One Flight Up has long been a sentimental favorite of mine, and as I have not heard most of these albums, out of the ones I have heard Go is probably the tightest, most fully realised of all the Dex BN's I have heard. I voted for OFU, becuase I didn't want to just be another of the throng to vote for Go, but its pretty much a toss up imho. Quote
Jazz Kat Posted March 27, 2005 Report Posted March 27, 2005 I feel Dex Calling is very unique and the material was superb. Don't get me wrong, Go is a good album, I just wouldn't call it MY favorite Dex album. Quote
Dan Gould Posted March 27, 2005 Report Posted March 27, 2005 I feel Dex Calling is very unique and the material was superb. Don't get me wrong, Go is a good album, I just wouldn't call it MY favorite Dex album. S'allright: You get a free pass just because of the fact that you were digging Dex at the age of eight. Quote
Michael Weiss Posted March 27, 2005 Report Posted March 27, 2005 #1 Go!/A Swingin' Affair - a tie (recorded two days apart). #2 Clubhouse and Gettin' Around - a tie (also recorded consecutive days) Both have the best rhythm sections. Best overall marks for players and repertoire. Quote
SEK Posted March 27, 2005 Report Posted March 27, 2005 "Our Man In Paris" has always been my favorite Dexter Gordon album; everything on and about it works for me. "One Flight Up" has become my second favorite, only in the last decade. Before then, I thought that it was relatively commercial. I wasn't really listening. When I was a teenager, KBCA used to play "Go" all the time; it's a good record, and I still have it, but I don't often play it... Quote
Jazz Kat Posted March 28, 2005 Report Posted March 28, 2005 I don't often play many cd's a lot. I mainly listen to new recordings about 20 times in a row until I get used to it, or tired of it, then I (try) and buy another album. Only the great ones stand out. Quote
scottb Posted March 28, 2005 Report Posted March 28, 2005 I do often play many CDs a lot and my favorite of the many Dexter CDs I play often is ONE FLIGHT UP. Can't get enough of Tanya! Quote
Free For All Posted March 28, 2005 Report Posted March 28, 2005 By the way, just noticed the title. Dexter Grodon? Sound like a case of dexlexia to me. Quote
Jazz Kat Posted March 28, 2005 Report Posted March 28, 2005 I assume if I ever get to the point of over 2000 disks, I won't be playing many often. Quote
Free For All Posted March 28, 2005 Report Posted March 28, 2005 Can't get enough of Tanya! I hear that! Quote
marcoliv Posted March 28, 2005 Report Posted March 28, 2005 I do often play many CDs a lot and my favorite of the many Dexter CDs I play often is ONE FLIGHT UP. Can't get enough of Tanya! i couldn't have said better!!!!!!!!!! Marcus Quote
Dan Gould Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 How is Doin Allright? Doin Allright is terrific and shouldn't be missed. I still haven't voted on this one becaue its really impossible to choose. It would be easier to pick the least favorites which would be Dexter's Calling, Landslide and Our Man in Paris but only because I reach for those less frequently than Doin Allright, One Flight Up, Go and Swingin' Affair. But they're all great. Just those latter four are a bit greater for me. Quote
jazzmessenger Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 I don't have many Dex CDs, but I voted for GO! All songs on that ablum are excellent. Quote
JSngry Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 GO! is the "best album" (DOIN' ALRIGHT comes close, but Dex's playing doesn't soar the way it does on GO!, and w/Dex, the more the soar, the higher the score)), but OUR MAN IN PARIS is my favorite, just because it's got that danger to it - Bud sounding like he could lose it at any second, Pierre Michelot doing the same (but for totally different reasons), Klook sounding like he don't givaphuk, he's gonna get his nut one way or the other, and Dex sounding gleefully delighted to be right smackdab in the big fat middle of it all, doing his full part for and to maintaining the states of all concerned. If anybody on this date was totally sober, I'd be shocked. Men at work, growed mens, properly fortified for the tasks at hand. It ain't just a record, it's real life! Quote
Jazz Kat Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 I don't have many Dex CDs, but I voted for GO! All songs on that ablum are excellent. I think we can safely say most people voted for Go. Which by the way was another one where the drummer's (Billy Higgins) rivet cymbol was either too close, or was over modjulated. Quote
scottb Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 I think we can safely say most people voted for Go Actually most people voted for one other than GO But Go did get the most votes! Quote
Bright Moments Posted September 28, 2012 Report Posted September 28, 2012 I almost voted for "One Flight Up", which has been in constant rotation since the RVG came out. I had never heard it before, and it was mind-blowing. But in the end, "Go" played a huge part in getting me into jazz, and it will probably always be my favorite. i have the pre-RVG cd "one flight up". is there any reason to get the RVG? is it an upgrade? is there ANY discernable difference in sound quality? mine sounds pretty darn good! B-) never did get an answer to this question! Quote

mjzee Posted September 28, 2012 Report Posted September 28, 2012 1. Our Man In Paris 2. Doin' Alright 3. Clubhouse 4. Go 5. Landslide 6. A Swingin' Affair 7. Dexter Calling 8. Gettin' Around 9. One Flight Up Jim S. had a great description of Our Man In Paris - that date rocks! Also, props for the sadly underrated Clubhouse - it's much much better than the one Alfred decided to release (Gettin' Around). Quote
colinmce Posted September 28, 2012 Report Posted September 28, 2012 Gotta say Our Man as well. Just overwhelmingly powerful playing on that one, almost scary at times! Quote
