mikeweil Posted September 29, 2012 Report Posted September 29, 2012 Can't help it, like 'em all - but what JSngry and others said about the Paris date is very much to the point ...Seems I changed my mind, impossible to make a choice in my current state of mind, which is not about choosing or judging. paul secor Posted September 29, 2012 Report Posted September 29, 2012 Believe I voted for A Swingin' Affair, but could just have easily voted for Go!, Paris, or Calling. Dexter was on a roll. Quote
mjzee Posted September 29, 2012 Report Posted September 29, 2012 The sound quality on Our Man might have something to do with it, too. It's not a Rudy date. It sounds rawer, and feels more electric. Quote
Morganized Posted September 29, 2012 Report Posted September 29, 2012 Believe I voted for A Swingin' Affair, but could just have easily voted for Go!, Paris, or Calling. Dexter was on a roll. I would respond exactly the same. I still prefer his later stuff on Steeplechase for some reason and the Black Lion live dates are some of my favorite Dexter. Quote
Dan Gould Posted September 29, 2012 Report Posted September 29, 2012 How is Doin Allright? Doin Allright is terrific and shouldn't be missed. I still haven't voted on this one becaue its really impossible to choose. It would be easier to pick the least favorites which would be Dexter's Calling, Landslide and Our Man in Paris but only because I reach for those less frequently than Doin Allright, One Flight Up, Go and Swingin' Affair. But they're all great. Just those latter four are a bit greater for me. Was surprised to realize I could still vote on this one ... and I went with One Flight Up. That would be followed by: Doin Allright Swingin' Affair Go Clubhouse Gettin Around Our Man In Paris Dexter's Calling/Landslide Quote
.:.impossible Posted September 29, 2012 Report Posted September 29, 2012 I really wish the piano was better recorded on the Paris date. Quote
king ubu Posted September 29, 2012 Report Posted September 29, 2012 Added another vote for Paris - but as others said, it's a tough call! Doin' Alright would have been next in line, but I love them all ... particular soft spot for Dexter Calling because of the rhythm section, and took particularly long to really dig One Flight Up. Shawn Posted September 30, 2012 Report Posted September 30, 2012 The song "Tanya" from One Flight Up was what made me a Dexter fan in the first place. Quote
BillF Posted September 30, 2012 Report Posted September 30, 2012 How is Doin Allright? My favourite! Dexter at this stage still retaining something of his Bird-influenced style heard on his mid-50s albums, plus the brilliant young Freddie Hubbard and the very swingin' rhythm team of Parlan, Tucker and Harewood. Bright Moments Posted September 30, 2012 Report Posted September 30, 2012 I almost voted for "One Flight Up", which has been in constant rotation since the RVG came out. I had never heard it before, and it was mind-blowing. But in the end, "Go" played a huge part in getting me into jazz, and it will probably always be my favorite. i have the pre-RVG cd "one flight up". is there any reason to get the RVG? is it an upgrade? is there ANY discernable difference in sound quality? mine sounds pretty darn good! B-) never did get an answer to this question! Quote

The Magnificent Goldberg Posted September 30, 2012 Report Posted September 30, 2012 Re the poll: Don't forget this one (which I haven't heard): Never heard of that one. Did Francis produce it? My favourites of those keep changing but, on the basis of how much I play them, #1 is one no one else seems to like - 'Gettin' around'. I like it partly because Dex doesn't seem to be trying too hard and there's some kind of aural connection to Frank Haynes in the way he's playing. Next is '1 flight up', another in which EASE is the predominant factor for me. (Then 'CLubhouse' and 'Go') MG Quote
mjzee Posted October 1, 2012 Report Posted October 1, 2012 Never heard of that one. Did Francis produce it? No. BN released it in (I think) 1997; tapes from a radio broadcast. Back cover: Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted October 1, 2012 Report Posted October 1, 2012 V interesting, thanks. Looks like it was produced by Mr Shanghaied. Must be reading it wrong MG Quote
