Hardbopjazz Posted August 23, 2004 Report Posted August 23, 2004 (edited) Dave Brubeck will be playing at the Planting Fields on Long Island 8/28/04, along with Keiko Matsui, with whom I am not familiar with. Anyone know anything about her playing? AMG lists her as jazz, but I have never heard anything from her. Edited August 23, 2004 by Hardbopjazz Quote
Aggie87 Posted August 23, 2004 Report Posted August 23, 2004 I believe she may be more accurately classified as new age, but I don't know her music, so someone else may have to jump in. Or maybe a jazz/newage fusion (?). Quote
Dan Gould Posted August 23, 2004 Report Posted August 23, 2004 I think Aggie is right. If I remember correctly, my Father-in-Law claimed an affection for jazz and cited Miss Matsui as a favorite. He even sent a disc of hers to my wife. We hated it immediately and couldn't listen to it all the way through. Quote
DTMX Posted August 23, 2004 Report Posted August 23, 2004 Keiko Matsui - like Yanni without the mustache. Go see Brubeck - he's still got it. Matsui never had it. Quote

ejp626 Posted August 23, 2004 Report Posted August 23, 2004 I saw Brubeck two years ago at Ravinia and wasn't that impressed, other than the obligatory Take Five. But then he played CSO this year and was great. He has a new composition called London Flats (or Flats and Sharps or something), which is quite interesting. So I think he is in better health this time around. I think he will be playing until the end, which is always inspiring. Quote
Bill Nelson Posted August 24, 2004 Report Posted August 24, 2004 Gimme a front-row ticket and limo to the door -- I might do it. Otherwise, I'm filled with inertia. Quote
dave9199 Posted August 24, 2004 Report Posted August 24, 2004 Brubeck's set at Newport was very inspiring. Great saxophonist though I don't remember his name. Quote

Millitello (sp?), I believe. And yes, he's excellent and a bit grittier than you'd expect from a Brubeck saxophonist. Guy Quote

In Atlanta a few years ago the Quartet opened with "Broadway Bossa Nova" on which Militello normally plays alto sax (and really gets down-n-dirty on it) but for this performance he played flute. And tore it up. He used to be in Maynard Ferguson band and that's what he kind of reminds me of - a woodwind Maynard Ferguson. Quote
The Red Menace Posted August 25, 2004 Report Posted August 25, 2004 Mrs. Menace and I much enjoyed the work of Mr. Militello on David Brubeck's Park Avenue South release. Quote
