Big Al Posted April 13, 2005 Report Posted April 13, 2005 I voted for RW, not because I think he's better than the rest but because sometimes he's just exactly what I want and that's worth recognizing any day. Quote
Big Al Posted April 13, 2005 Report Posted April 13, 2005 I guess my suggestion for everybody who is mainly only listening to Larry Young is..., put "Unity" down for a minutes and put on Freddie Roach's "Good Move" or Shirley Scott on "Dearly Beloved" or Jack McDuff on "Tough Duff." I mean, there's so much MORE out there than Larry Young and being "out." Being "in" is cool too. I wonder if the reason for many people’s votes for Larry Young has to do more with some kind of Coltrane-connection than anything else. What I mean is, if it weren’t for Larry Young, they might not listen to ANY jazz organ; but they’ll listen to Larry Young because they’ve been told of his Coltrane-influence in his playing. (Having Elvin Jones on your records doesn’t hurt, either!) Quote
marcello Posted April 13, 2005 Report Posted April 13, 2005 Maybe they are just excited by "The Moontrane"! Quote

mikeweil Posted April 13, 2005 Report Posted April 13, 2005 From this list, I chose Larry Young. But my favourite among the dead is Don Patterson, Melvin Rhyne among the living (older), although I really dig the Turbanator's recent recordings. Among the younger, almost all of them. Quote
