mikeos Posted August 21, 2004 Report Posted August 21, 2004 Tony Hofi Quartet "Plays Monk" -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Strongly recommended. I saw the quartet on Thirsday and it knocked me out. Bought the CD at the gig. Tony plays fiery alto and baritone on the CD. Supoorted by Jonathon Gee on piano, Ben Hazleton, bass, and the great Winston Clifford, drums. Excellent value at 70 minutes. Specific Records (division of Proper). A Lark Ascending Posted August 21, 2004 Report Posted August 21, 2004 A Nottingham lad, no less! I know someone who went to school with him! He's playing in Nottingham in the Autumn. I must attend that one. Quote
JohnS Posted August 21, 2004 Report Posted August 21, 2004 (edited) I've not managed to hear this one yet but I've seen Tony Kofi in a number of situations from the Andrew Hill big band to his own quartet. He always makes a good impression. I'm looking forward to catching this group live. I'm sorry I missed their run through of the complete Monk compositions at last years London Jazz Festival. That must have been quite an event. Edited August 23, 2004 by JohnS Quote
sidewinder Posted August 21, 2004 Report Posted August 21, 2004 Yes John - he was excellent with the Andrew Hill Big Band. Prompt for me to catch a Tony Kofi gig ! Quote
relyles Posted August 21, 2004 Report Posted August 21, 2004 I heard the disc and was very impressed with his interpretations of Monk and his playing on both alto and baritone. Quote
JSngry Posted August 22, 2004 Report Posted August 22, 2004 I've heard it too, and although I wasn't exactly "knocked out", I heard an individual voice trying to get out and sometimes succeeding, and that's always a good thing. Funny thing - before I knew anything about Mr. Kofi or his bandmates, my very first response to the mucic was "They sound British", not in any way derogatory, mind you, just that that was the "flavor" of the music, which again points to individuality. Good thing, that is. I also think I'd like to hear Mr. Kofi and crew on an all-original program I'm just about Monk-Tribute-ed out these days to be honest with you. Quote

I'll be seeing Tony again in September. I'll give him your request. Quote
