Chrome Posted August 20, 2004 Report Posted August 20, 2004 (edited) Does anyone know anything about this Verve CD, recorded in 1969 w/a European rhythm section? I'm tempted to pick it up from BMG, and AMG raves about it. Edited August 20, 2004 by Chrome Quote
LarryCurleyMoe Posted August 20, 2004 Report Posted August 20, 2004 I bought and played a couple of months ago and have heard in past on vinyl...I'd say it's among my favorite Phil recordings...exciting and swinging - if I remember correctly! I don't think you'll be disappointed! Quote
DrJ Posted August 20, 2004 Report Posted August 20, 2004 It's excellent. Much more exploratory in nature than later vintage Woods, and the band is up to the challenge. Quote
king ubu Posted August 20, 2004 Report Posted August 20, 2004 That band is first rate! George Gruntz is on piano, Daniel Humair on drums, and Henri Texier on bass. I have only heard it once on radio, but I did like it a lot, and will have to pick it up some day. ubu Quote
ghost of miles Posted August 20, 2004 Report Posted August 20, 2004 I picked this up at a half-off going-out-of-business sale but haven't had a chance to listen to it yet... thanks for the thread, I'll break it out tonight and give it a spin. Quote
Clunky Posted August 20, 2004 Report Posted August 20, 2004 Fopp in UK has this for £5 at the moment, exciting stuff but sounds wise it's a little harsh on the ears but still acceptable enough. Woods never seems to get much attention other than being a Bird copyist but I like what I've heard so far. Quote
robviti Posted August 20, 2004 Report Posted August 20, 2004 i like this recording. having enjoyed stolen moments for some years (another live date from 1969 on jmy) it was a pleasant surprise to see verve reissue this disc last year. Quote
brownie Posted August 20, 2004 Report Posted August 20, 2004 Phil Woods was leading his European Rhythm Machine at the time of the Montreux festival album. A good record! Even better was the 'Phil Woods & His European Rhythm Machine' LP that was published on the Pierre Cardin label. The unit had Gordon Beck, Henri Texier and Daniel Humair by then. This was also issued on Inner City vinyl. Not sure it came out on CD but definitely worth seeking. The disc has excellent versions of 'Chromatic Banana' and 'The Day When The World...'. Quote
Chrome Posted August 20, 2004 Author Report Posted August 20, 2004 Thanks for the input ... I just went ahead and ordered it from BMG! Quote
