Rooster_Ties Posted August 19, 2004 Report Posted August 19, 2004 (edited) OK, what are your favorite recordings of tunes that originally (or most prominently) appeared on BN recordings from the 1960's?? Yes, I'm limiting this thread to the 60's, because let's face it, that's the decade where the tunes -- the compositions that help define the label -- where they nearly all come from. And in particular, it'd be good to hear about examples of two things (though this thread isn't just limited to these two categories)... 1. Other recordings also made in the 60's (on other labels), of tunes primarily associated with Blue Note. (Often this happened when a BN guy guested on somebody else's non-BN date as a sideman.) 2. More recent albums/CD's with remakes of multiple tunes primarily associated with BN. (Be they single-artist tribute albums (like to Herbie, or Wayne, or Lee Morgan, etc...), or albums that include two or more BN-centric tunes originally by different artists.) Here's one that fits the bill pretty well... Uri Caine's second album as a leader, "Toys" (JMT, 1996), includes versions of several Herbie tunes from the 60's: "The Prisoner", "Dolphin Dance", "Toys", and "Cantaloupe Island". (And for me, "The Prisoner" is particularly interesting here -- in that it is covered much less frequently than many of Herbie's other tunes from the 60's.) What others are your favorites?? Dan Gould Posted August 19, 2004 Report Posted August 19, 2004 James Spaulding tears up 'Soul Station" on a Muse CD from the early 90s, Blues Nexus. Quote
JSngry Posted August 19, 2004 Report Posted August 19, 2004 I like Herbie's version of "Watermelon Man" on HEADHUNTERS. Does that count? Quote
king ubu Posted August 19, 2004 Report Posted August 19, 2004 Don't know if they're all originally from Blue Note LPs, but the fine James Spaulding disc "Escapade" (High Note), has the following tunes (and some more): Escapade (K.D.) ("Our THing") Cheesecake (Dexter Gordon) ("Go") Madline (Hank Mobley) Grant's Tune (Grant Green) ("Solid") High Modes (Mobley) The Break Through (Mobley) (this is from the Muse album of the same title) La Mesha (K.D.) ("Page One") Don't have the Mobley stuff around. ubu Quote
Chrome Posted August 19, 2004 Report Posted August 19, 2004 Anyone have the Benny Golson disc "That's Funky"? The lineup is Golson, Nat Adderley, Monty Alexander, Ray Drummond and Marvin Smith and they get funky on BN classics Moanin', Sidewinder and Blues March ... along with Work Song, two versions of Mack the Knife, and a Golson original called Mississippi Windows. It's from 2000 on Arkadia and kicks serious butt. Quote

brownie Posted August 19, 2004 Report Posted August 19, 2004 Some of the tunes covered may not fit exactly in the '60s timeframe but I liked the Black Saint album by the Sonny Clark Memorial Quartet (John Zorn, Wayne Horvitz, Ray Drummond, Bobby Previte) that recreated Sonny Clark's tunes like 'Minor Meeting', 'Cool Struttin'', 'Voodoo', 'Somethin' Special' and others. I have not relistened to that one in a long time. Will check to find out if it stood the test of time... Quote
jlhoots Posted August 20, 2004 Report Posted August 20, 2004 (edited) I have HatArt 6005: News For Lulu (Zorn, George Lewis, Frisell) that I believe fits in here. Or was that more 50's?? At any rate I like it. There was also a 2nd volume, More News For Lulu that I don't have. Edited August 20, 2004 by jlhoots Quote
danasgoodstuff Posted August 20, 2004 Report Posted August 20, 2004 Love News, More News & SC Memorial Q I have a JB instrumentals LP from the 60s where they do Sidewinder and Song For My Father, w/out funking them up too much. May be we should start another thread for Blue on Blue covers of BN material on BN, eg John Patton's versions of The Turnaround & Chitlins Con Carne? Quote
