JSngry Posted August 18, 2004 Report Posted August 18, 2004 Joe Farrell album cover poll soon to come! Quote
Dan Gould Posted August 18, 2004 Report Posted August 18, 2004 I'm not going to vote but years and years ago, when I was a voracious child reader, I borrowed my father's copy of Yes I Can and while I have no idea how much of it was polished up to make Sammy look the best that he could, I remember it being quite a remarkable and enjoyable book. Before he became a caricature, Sammy was a helluva entertainer. Quote
patricia Posted August 18, 2004 Report Posted August 18, 2004 (edited) Sammy Davis Jr. was a hell-damner of an entertainer, before he became the lap-dog to the Rat Pack. He had so much natural talent that it was almost scary. Then, he let himself become a caracature and that was just sad. I voted for the real one he lost. I actually liked him when he wore an eyepatch. It seemed to me that when he started wearing the tinted shades, he was well into his really irritating "super cool" phase. He still had loads of the right stuff, but seemed to be trying too hard. Edited August 18, 2004 by patricia Quote
JSngry Posted August 18, 2004 Author Report Posted August 18, 2004 I totally agree that he was a helluva an enntertainer, up to the end in fact (saw him on Letterman in the very late 80s singing "I Can't Get Started", and it ws superb). But that's not the purpose of this poll! Quote
bertrand Posted August 18, 2004 Report Posted August 18, 2004 I hope Blue Note will reissue Golden Boy soon. Anyone know the recording date Bertrand. Quote
catesta Posted August 18, 2004 Report Posted August 18, 2004 (edited) I voted for the glass one(s). I don't know if I have a favorite, so I'll just say the one that looked the most real. I'd vote the same way for Peter Falk. B-) Edited August 18, 2004 by catesta Quote

RDK Posted August 18, 2004 Report Posted August 18, 2004 "Sammy Davis' Eye" would be a great name for an alt-rock band... Quote

Noj Posted August 18, 2004 Report Posted August 18, 2004 I used to work with Sammy's STEPson Mark Davis--who oddly enough looks very similar to Sammy. Coincidentally I just saw Mark being interviewed on Sammy's E! True Hollywood Story while eating lunch... Quote
RDK Posted August 18, 2004 Report Posted August 18, 2004 Why would they interview Mark Davis while he was eating lunch? Quote
Harold_Z Posted August 18, 2004 Report Posted August 18, 2004 Wasn't there a song by Kim Carnes about Sammy's eye ? Quote

I believe that there was, but she re-titled it "Bette Davis Eyes" and that re-worked song was a huge hit. For some reason "Sammy Davis' Glass Eye" didn't quite catch on. Something about the cadence...................or something. Can't understand it. Edited August 18, 2004 by patricia Quote
RDK Posted August 18, 2004 Report Posted August 18, 2004 Seriously, though, Yes I Can is surprisingly good book... Quote
