desertblues Posted August 18, 2004 Report Posted August 18, 2004 The Cooper/Holman/Rosolino set is now Running Low! This one has been on my list for some time - have to add it to my Jazztet pre-order (damn, there goes another $64)... B-) Quote
John Tapscott Posted August 18, 2004 Report Posted August 18, 2004 It's worth it. Definitely a "'west cost" vibe, but there's some great swinging music here. I think this set is worth getting for the Rosolino tracks alone. But you also get "Holman's Great Big Band, " some really fine Holman small group stuff including quartet tracks with Carl Perkins. And the Cooper stuff mostly sparkles too, though I find perhaps a bit less variety in his arranging. But all in all you can't go wrong with this set. And as I recall, the CD's average around 70 minutes each. Quote
wesbed Posted August 18, 2004 Report Posted August 18, 2004 Here is some additional information in another Kenton Presents thread. link Quote
wesbed Posted August 19, 2004 Report Posted August 19, 2004 (edited) I enjoy Bob Cooper's saxophone playing, on this set, much more than I would have thought. The couple of quirky vocal tracks offered by Frank Rosolino are unique and fun. I smile every time I hear the Rosolino vocal tunes. Edited August 19, 2004 by wesbed Quote
king ubu Posted August 19, 2004 Report Posted August 19, 2004 Guess: am I glad I have one on my shelf already, or not? ubu B-) Quote
kenny weir Posted August 19, 2004 Report Posted August 19, 2004 Yeah, I feel a little smug, too. I ordered the Chico Hamilton - my first Mosaic - and it went. I ordered the Kenton Presents - and it's on its way out, too. I ordered the Johnny Hodges a couple of days ago - so maybe it's for the axe as well. Quote
kenny weir Posted August 19, 2004 Report Posted August 19, 2004 (edited) Actually, I suspect that recent board musings on the Kenton Presents set are exactly what has put it on the Running Low list. Edited August 19, 2004 by kenny weir Quote
Alfred Posted August 19, 2004 Report Posted August 19, 2004 Guess: am I glad I have one on my shelf already, or not? ubu B-) Yupp! It is not my most often played Mosaic but nice to have it on board! Quote

No money here, after the two VeeJays! Quote
JohnS Posted August 19, 2004 Report Posted August 19, 2004 I'm glad I stepped in about three months ago. Very nice set. Quote
ghost of miles Posted August 19, 2004 Report Posted August 19, 2004 More kudos for this one. I sat on it for a long time (well, not literally) and finally ordered--very glad when I listened to it. Not material that's likely to re-surface again anytime soon. Quote
sidewinder Posted August 19, 2004 Report Posted August 19, 2004 (edited) With both this set and the Teddy Wilson breathing down my neck, this is going to be yet another expensive Mosaic month.. Edited August 19, 2004 by sidewinder Quote
Brad Posted August 20, 2004 Report Posted August 20, 2004 If you like West Coast jazz, this is a must. A very fine set. It's about time that this set got some appreciation. Quote
wesbed Posted August 20, 2004 Report Posted August 20, 2004 It feels good, for the first time, ever, that 'I' own a Mosaic 'before' it's selected to go out of print. I purchased the Kenton Presents box, a few weeks back, along with the Teddy Wilson box. I checked the chronological order of the Mosaic catalog and figured the Kenton Presents box might a set on the 'soon to go out of print' list. B-) Quote
Tony Pusey Posted August 20, 2004 Report Posted August 20, 2004 I never had this on a high priority, but took a chance last summer during a True Blue promotion and was really pleasantly surprised, even with the quirky Rossalino vocals. And I play it much more often than some of the more obvious sets. Dont miss it ! Quote
wesbed Posted August 20, 2004 Report Posted August 20, 2004 even with the quirky Rossalino vocals. If I remember correctly, there are FOUR Rosolino vocal tracks on this set. The rest of the box is non-vocal. Rosolino's vocals are quirky but I enjoy them very much. To me, his vocals are a highlight of the Kenton Presents box. To my ears, Rosolino is very good when he sings That Old Black Magic. I can listen over and over. My point, most of the set is NOT vocal. If you're wondering about there being too many vocals, there aren't. I'd like to hear more from Rosolino's vocal attempts. He makes me smile every time I hear him sing. Quote
Jazzmoose Posted August 22, 2004 Report Posted August 22, 2004 You'd think that by now I'd know what a stupid idea this was. "Hmmm...should I get this Mosaic that's going OOP? I dunno, let's see what the guys say on Organissimo!" Duh...okay, I'll order it Monday. Jeez... Quote
Big Wheel Posted August 22, 2004 Report Posted August 22, 2004 Does the Rosolino stuff on here rank among the best of his work, or is it only somewhere in the middle? I've only heard a tiny bit of this one (played the Holman tracks with Carl Perkins on my radio tribute to the latter). Quote

brownie Posted August 22, 2004 Report Posted August 22, 2004 The Rosolino stuff in Excellent! So is the rest of the set. One of the most interesting Mosaic box! Quote
jacknife Posted August 22, 2004 Report Posted August 22, 2004 Oh crap, another running low set! I think I'm going to pass on this one, damn it! I want it, I set up a savings account for endangered Mosaics, I have the money but I can't bring myself to spend it...argh! I am in the process of starting to build a house and need every penny I can pinch. Oh, the sacrifice....I'm bummed! Quote
Bright Moments Posted August 22, 2004 Report Posted August 22, 2004 ok, i know that this should probably go in the stupid questions thread but i have to ask: is the box for this set the regular black with silver lettering on the spine? the only picture that i have ever seen of this set is this one: Quote
Free For All Posted August 22, 2004 Report Posted August 22, 2004 Normal Mosaic black and silver spine. Quote
Bright Moments Posted August 22, 2004 Report Posted August 22, 2004 Normal Mosaic black and silver spine. thank you! B-) Quote
Bluerein Posted August 23, 2004 Report Posted August 23, 2004 Wesbed: I guess you have the Collectables Rosolino? He sings a lot on that one. It's the Turn me Losse LP from 1961 on Reprise. Cheers, Reinier PS: I don't like his singing and didn't buy that cd because of it........ Quote
