mikeweil Posted August 15, 2004 Report Posted August 15, 2004 Congratulations, Marcus!!! You fooled us all the way with some items. Tony Williams with Tommy Flanagan: I knew Tony recorded in that trio, but the sound is so far from his - it must have been a loaned drumset, and as I said, it's very badly recorded. That Japanese bass drums team is a killer! I'm on my way to a week-long workshop in the Black Forest and probably won't be able to look here for the coming week, so thank you very very much, and can you give some recommendations for Luis Carlos Vinhas? I liked him a lot on the Herbie Mann Do The Bossa Nova LP, what was the trio he played in? Obrigado! Quote
brownie Posted August 15, 2004 Report Posted August 15, 2004 Marcoliv wrote about track 4 - Benny Golson Quicksilver 'a Horace Silver composition on a "SBM Remastered" version from Fresh Sounds ' On the BFT disc, this Fresh Sounds reissue sounds way, way better than what I have on the original LP release of this album the Audio Fidelity 'Pop + Jazz = Swing' on which producer Tom Wilson had that weird 'trendy' idea to remix on the left and right channels - for a muddy result - all the tracks and ruin the sound of all of them. Do I have to thank Marcus for making me want to purchase another reissue? Quote
marcoliv Posted August 15, 2004 Author Report Posted August 15, 2004 c'mon brownie, you should help Fresh Sounds Records Marcus Quote
brownie Posted August 15, 2004 Report Posted August 15, 2004 Marcus, with the money I have spent on Fresh Sounds releases (I started getting them back in vinyl days), I am sure they have been able to acquire gigantic headquarters in downtown Barcelona (unless they invested in Andorra properties) Quote
Dan Gould Posted August 15, 2004 Report Posted August 15, 2004 (edited) Thanks again for the BFT, Marcus. This set a modern record for number of discs I own or have owned. As to the details: On number one, at least I pegged the era right, even if it was just an attempt to recreate it #2-I had this Teodros Avery CD when it came out but I didn't hang onto it. I know I said that it took me a while to identify this standard-I was sure I recognized it as such but as I named it in my head, I didn't write it down and couldn't figure it out again. So I figured I'd fudge it, assuming someone else would ID it for me. I'm really surprised this is an orignal it sounds so darn familiar. As far as the Golson goes, I just ordered this myself, Brownie, but I had no idea at the time (two nights ago) that it was on this BFT. #8-the track selected is a good reason why I didn't keep the disc ultimately. That's a trane ride I generally avoid. #13-I said that this was terribly familiar and very annoying that I couldn't figure it out ... well now I know why. I've had this Buddy Montgomery CD for a while now, and its all quite nice and definitely recommended. #14 is the other one that I own but didn't recognize. Probably cause I have a congenital aversion to anything connected to Sting. Thanks again, Marcus! Edited August 15, 2004 by Dan Gould Quote
Jazzmoose Posted August 16, 2004 Report Posted August 16, 2004 Damn. I thought this was a Ten Years After thread... Quote
king ubu Posted August 16, 2004 Report Posted August 16, 2004 Marcus, thanks a lot for this enjoyable disc! Again, apologies for not posting my guesses, but I'm simply too deep into the Basie work at the moment. (And then, I wouldn't have known any but the Schifrin, and maybe I would have gotten Golson right... after a few more listens...) ubu Quote
catesta Posted August 16, 2004 Report Posted August 16, 2004 Nice one, Marcus. I gave track four it's proper due over the weekend, and now I'm into it, so it looks as if I have another to pick up. Quote
