I am looking to sell this set and I'm only selling it because there's a lot of great Mosaic and other sets (Dexter) coming out in the fall so something's gotta give. Everything is mint and I kid you not. The box is in fantastic condition and the book is likewise in fantastic conditon (looks brand new; I'm fanatical about those things). I paid a pretty penny for this so if you're interested please send me a PM. I will ship by UPS because I think they're safer and for this you want safe. Thanks.

Is this a CD or LP set? (Did it ever come out on CDs? The Mosaic website just lists 6-LP set). And is it small combo or big band jazz? Thanks.

It was an LP-only set which, if memory serves, contained Hodges' 1951-1955 Verve small-group sessions.

That's a shame that this was released only on LPs.  I wonder why.

I think it was because Mosaic was still mainly LP-oriented at the time (the late 1980s).

Actually according to a Mosaic statement, French Verve had a cd set planned at the time, which unfortunately never saw the light of day; Mosaic could not get the cd rights but in hindsight it's too bad they didn't.

Didn't know that, thanks for the info. Too bad indeed!

This is a superb collection.

It was almost all released on CDs by Blue Moon in Spain, with very good sound. They left out one alternate take (the only alternate in the entire Mosaic set) and the contents of the last two sessions, from 1955, if memory serves. A friend sent me a CDr burn of the stuff that wasn't put out by Blue Moon, plus a copy of a copy of a copy of the Mosaic book - just barely readable!

I don't know whether the Blue Moon CDs are still in print. That company's website isn't very user-friendly.

[blue Moon also issued about 4 more CDs of Rabbit's sessions from 1937 until the first Verve session in 1951. Those are also superb, and include some soprano work by the master.]

Sounds like another "borrowed" mastering job.

They left out (...) the contents of the last two sessions, from 1955, if memory serves.

Probably because those sessions aren't beyond the European 50-year copyright limit yet.

Actually, Verve France released five (or six?) LPs that had all - or nearly all - that was on the Mosaic box. They were released shortly before the Mosaic set.

Actually I believe the Blue Moons were out long before the Mosaic.

Back then they did a lot of " complete" sets. A good Lester Young, before verve, and nice Zoot Sims and Jimmy Giuffre sets that, at the time, no one else had probably even thought of.

I don't know where they got them from, but the sound is excellent, Hans.

And me dumbass passed on the COMPLETE series of these LPs once!!! Unbelieveable! Never had another chance to get this music since, save for one Verve CD I found, an old one, from around 1990.

All seven of the Hodges Blue Moons are still available

If you get vols 3 -5 of the41-54 series you'll have just about the complete Mosaic, less one Ballad Medley.

All seven are good though, but quite a bit of the non verve dates is available elswhere too,

They have a 4CD et that covers 37 -50.. again no verves in it.

One of these Mosaics just ended on eBay and it went for only $126 (+ ~$30 shipping from the UK). Another ends in a few days and it's currently only at $71. These prices seem a far cry from what this set used to get. I guess the Blue Moon CDs are hurting the value a bit.

I'll have to look into those Blue Moons. This Mosaic has been high on my want list for years (along with the Shorty Rogers). Maybe I should just get the Blue Moons and be done with it?

Lps mastered by RVG.

I do not know about this. I have the set and the booklet does say RVG mastering. Thing is, there is no vangelder in the dead wax. I notice initials MCR and 8 in the dead wax. Seems odd that vangelder is missing in this one case.

Kevin would seem to be right. I've only gotten a couple of nibbles and none near what I paid for it. So, I'm perfectly content to sit tight.

I'm not trying to hype this set; I don't believe it needs that but I've got a few Blue Moons (Lester, Illinois Jacquet) and I don't think the sound is all that great. Passable but not wonderful.
