Hardbopjazz Posted August 12, 2004 Report Posted August 12, 2004 (edited) He was and still is my favorite singer. I will try and watch this. Thanks for the spam. Edited August 12, 2004 by Hardbopjazz Quote
medjuck Posted August 12, 2004 Report Posted August 12, 2004 I saw him at the Disney Hall in LA in February and at one point he turned off the sound system and sang truly "unplugged". It was great. Quote
vibes Posted July 16, 2005 Report Posted July 16, 2005 Anyone have any Tony Bennett recommendations they'd like to share? I have a few of his CDs: Snowfall (The Christmas Album) The Ultimate Tony Bennett MTV Unplugged Tony Bennett/Bill Evans Album I prefer his later work, where his voice is a bit raspier. I've been listening to "Ultimate" and "Unplugged" a lot lately, and enjoy everything I have by him. Thanks in advance. Quote
jazzkrow Posted July 17, 2005 Report Posted July 17, 2005 I saw Bennett last month at the Indy Jazz Festival. I came in a bit of a skeptic but left totally blown away. He was incredible.... The audience went crazy with numerous standing ovations. He did 3 encores before the crowd would let him go. Quote
GA Russell Posted July 17, 2005 Report Posted July 17, 2005 My favorite is Perfectly Frank. I saw him in the mid-90s in Atlanta, and I loved the show. He did the same bit of singing a song without amplification. Quote
paul secor Posted July 17, 2005 Report Posted July 17, 2005 Three of my favorite Tony Bennett tracks were recorded with a Stan Getz group - Getz, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, Elvin Jones - and not released until 1983 on a Columbia compilation, Singin' Till the Girls Come Home. The tunes are "Just Friends", "Have You Met Miss Jones", and Clear Out of this World" - unusual and well done examples of Tony Bennett singing with a jazz group. I don't know if they've been reissued since then. If not, the LP is well worth looking for. Quote
brownie Posted July 17, 2005 Report Posted July 17, 2005 (edited) Never cared much for one of his early albums which I bought because people like Art Blakey, Jo Jones, Chico Hamilton and others were aboard. The Beat of My Heart Might be time to relisten to it now that it's reissued with extra material! Edited because the original links did not work! Edited July 17, 2005 by brownie Quote
Jazz Kat Posted July 17, 2005 Report Posted July 17, 2005 Frank is my favorite crooner. Dean Martin has that perfect voice! Quote

Bennett/Berlin (Columbia, 1987) is the one I listen to when I want to hear Tony. It's a nice selection of Irving Berlin tunes. Backing is by the Ralph Sharon Trio with guests George Benson (one track), Dizzy Gillespie, and Dexter Gordon (two tracks each). Quote
mr jazz Posted July 18, 2005 Report Posted July 18, 2005 Songs for the Jet Set and his Ellington tribute-sings hot and cool are two of my favorites. Whe you see Tony Bennett, you see a legend. He did a terrific version of Billy Joel's best song-New York State of Mind last time I saw him. Quote
clinthopson Posted July 19, 2005 Report Posted July 19, 2005 His work with Bill Evans is superb. Quote
Man with the Golden Arm Posted July 19, 2005 Report Posted July 19, 2005 Not really a fan of his voice. ← tough crowd... how about his art then? Quote
jazzbo Posted July 19, 2005 Report Posted July 19, 2005 He really is a good painter. Every time I'm in DC I go to the Smithsonian and admire his Ella painting. Quote
JSngry Posted July 19, 2005 Report Posted July 19, 2005 Anybody know of any recordings (official or otherwise) from the time in the very early 1980s when he was using Harold Land? Quote
gmonahan Posted November 8, 2007 Report Posted November 8, 2007 Did anybody catch the Clint Eastwood American Masters special on Tony? Some great performances in that! It got me turned on to his music, and I found the relatively recently issued 13-cd box for a good price on Amazon. Anybody want to offer a list of their favorite Bennett? I find I really like "I Wanna Be Around...," his follow-up to the more famous San Francisco album. Quote

gmonahan Posted November 11, 2007 Report Posted November 11, 2007 http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?...rm=frooglemusic Also this Some of the Amazon reviewers are down on the set, and for someone with a lot of Bennett, it wouldn't be much of a deal, but for those wanting to start big, it's a good deal, especially used! Teasing the Korean Posted November 23, 2007 Report Posted November 23, 2007 Never cared much for one of his early albums which I bought because people like Art Blakey, Jo Jones, Chico Hamilton and others were aboard. The Beat of My Heart Might be time to relisten to it now that it's reissued with extra material! You need to give this one a second chance. It's considered one of his best. Quote
Fer Urbina Posted November 24, 2007 Report Posted November 24, 2007 http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?...rm=frooglemusic Thanks! It looks like a repackaging of already published CDs, though. There's stuff from the 1950s that's never been reissued on CD (AFAIK). F Quote
alocispepraluger102 Posted November 24, 2007 Report Posted November 24, 2007 this slightly offtopic might interest.... Prince and Tony Bennett Surprise Stevie Wonder Fans November 19, 2007 12:15 p.m. EST Anne Lu - Celebrity News Service News Writer Madison Square, NY (CNS) - Stevie Wonder made his fans' ticket money worth every penny on his two-and-a-half hour November 17 concert. Music heavyweights Tony Bennett and Prince graced the R&B legend's sold-out concert in Madison Square Garden, New York. Bennett and Wonder sang "For Once In My Life" together, which they released in "Duets: An American Classic," Bennett's 2006 album. The song won a Grammy for Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals. The artist with so many monikers, Prince, dazzled the audience with his appearance on "Superstition," during which he played the guitar while Wonder is on the keyboard. Prince had also played the guitar on "So What the Fuss" in Wonder's 2005 album, "A Time 2 Love". The show started off with the crooner being escorted to the center stage by his daughter, Aisha. He asked for a moment of silence to pay homage to those lost in the 9/11 terrorist attack and then went on to narrate how his mother's death inspired him to return on the road. The night was filled with some of Wonder's greatest hits from his successful career like "My Cherie Amour," "Signed, Sealed, Delivered," "You Are The Sunshine Of My Life," "I Wish," "Boogie On, Reggae Woman," and "Sir Duke" among others. This show is Wonder's first headlining concert since 1996. His tour resumes November 28 in Charlotte, NC and ends on December 9 in Glendale, Arizona. Quote
