Jason Drake Posted August 10, 2004 Report Posted August 10, 2004 Just got notification from David French at Frog of the following ; I have just issued DGF55, Earl Hines. The bulk of the CD covers the 1929 Victor band recordings plus nine alternate takes of the Decca/Brunswick sides that were not included on the recent Hep issue. Quote
Clunky Posted August 10, 2004 Report Posted August 10, 2004 plus nine alternate takes of the Decca/Brunswick sides that were not included on the recent Hep issue. What Hep issue,?? I wasn't aware of any Hines on Hep. Quote

montg Posted August 11, 2004 Report Posted August 11, 2004 Any word who did the remastering for the Frog reissue? Quote
J.A.W. Posted August 11, 2004 Report Posted August 11, 2004 Any word who did the remastering for the Frog reissue? Frog's David French just told me it was the late John R.T. Davies. French still has five J.R.T. masters to issue. Quote
montg Posted August 11, 2004 Report Posted August 11, 2004 Thanks Hans. It'll be interesting to see who, if anyone in particular, now becomes first call for these types of remastering jobs. Quote
J.A.W. Posted August 11, 2004 Report Posted August 11, 2004 It'll be interesting to see who, if anyone in particular, now becomes first call for these types of remastering jobs. David French told me his name is Ted Kendall, a John R.T. Davies pupil. He did the Clarence Williams QRS volumes for Frog. Quote
jazzbo Posted August 11, 2004 Report Posted August 11, 2004 Ted Kendall does very good work. I'm betting he gets a LOT of the calls that would have gone to Davies in the near future. Quote
montg Posted August 12, 2004 Report Posted August 12, 2004 I have two things Kendall did for Frog--Eddie South and Django--and the remastering for both is fabulous. Quote
FrancoisD Posted August 12, 2004 Report Posted August 12, 2004 (edited) Ted Kendall also did a fantastic job on the 1944-45 Artie Shaw Victor series--issued in full on the Hep 3-Cd set Artie Shaw and His Orchestra Hep CD 70. As for the remastering by J.R.T. on the Frog issue of Earl Hines, it will astound those who own the (few) previous editions. The restoration of the Victors from 1929 is nothing short of miraculous. The 1932-33 Brunswicks were less well recorded in the first place, but the result is astonishing there too. I regard the two Hines albums (Frog DGF 55 and Hep CD 1003) as truly indispensable. FrancoisD Posted August 12, 2004 Report Posted August 12, 2004 Do these two albums have many vocals? There are some vocals, but most are handled by jazz-sounding singers : Hines himself on "Everybody Loves My Baby"(2/13/29) and "Have You Ever Felt That Way?" (2/14/29), Walter Fuller, a trumpeter-singer much influenced by Louis Armstrong, on "Oh You Sweet Thing", "I Love You Because I Love You" (7/14/32), "Rosetta" (2/13/32), plus Valaida Snow's only pre-war American recording : "Maybe I'm To Blame". Except for two quite indifferent vocals by William Franklin on "Sweet Ella May" and "Good Little, Bad Little You", the rest of the performances on these two albums are purely instrumental. Quote
Adam Posted November 6, 2006 Report Posted November 6, 2006 up as well, just for the heck of it... Quote
