ghost of miles Posted August 11, 2004 Report Posted August 11, 2004 Yes, I've been following this... some interesting discussion. Most of KV's book picks are right on, although DANCE OF THE INFIDELS is chock-full of errors or downright falsehoods, almost better read as a jazz "novel." He's sure right that Jost's FREE JAZZ remains, several decades later, one of the best books on the topic, though I'm surprised that he left John Litweiler out of the mix. I'm enjoying KV's talk re: critics and such, and hoping to hear more about his approach to improv in the various settings/contexts that he enters or creates for himself. Quote
jazzbo Posted August 12, 2004 Report Posted August 12, 2004 I found one copy using my favorite book engine, www.abebooks.com http://dogbert.abebooks.com/servlet/Search...=JOST+JEKKEHARD Quote
king ubu Posted August 12, 2004 Report Posted August 12, 2004 Is Jost available in English? Lazaro, check Jost out! One of the best writers on free jazz, in my opinion. He finds words for things that some of us more mortals never can put into words. He has a deep understanding of the music, from a technical and close musical viewpoint, as well as a great knowledge of the social/political/economical backgrounds. ubu Quote
ghost of miles Posted August 13, 2004 Report Posted August 13, 2004 Yes. Mike Courtesy of Da Capo, which has brought many other fine jazz books back into print. Quote
Guest Chaney Posted August 14, 2004 Report Posted August 14, 2004 Interesting Bagatellen discussion on the Vandermark AAJ piece. Quote
blue lake Posted August 17, 2004 Author Report Posted August 17, 2004 (edited) Thanks for the tips on Jost: I'm real behind on getting to that, though the music being discussed is frequently on the stereo. Wow, it is only $10. Also, looking forward to the Ayler box, The Holy Ghost, which at 9 CD is going to be expensive. Saving and behaving! Lazaro, at Blue Lake.
