Looks like the Document label has been reissuing / has reissued his completed recorded works in chronological order, but I was wondering if anyone else here had picked up this disc, which is one of the recent release in what looks like the re-activated "Roots 'N Blues" series (cf. the Leroy Carr, Mamie Smith, The Mississippi Shieks), and wants to discuss.

Powerful stuff that should intrigue anyone interested in either spiritual expression OR the roots of those infectious rhythms and stirring vocal styles that have defined so much great African-American popular music.

If you want to hear it for yourself, CLICK HERE to access some clips. I'd recommend starting with "No Room In The Jailhouse"...

Well, that's a good question for all you posters! Certainly not a question to be considered frivolously, as the "Reverend" seems to be doing.

My answer is: Heaven, and I'm not boasting, because God did all the saving and I did nothing - that's why a person can be sure about this. (If it was up to me, I would have blown it long ago.)

I'm not believing in either place so I'm not able to respond.

I have heard a few sides by the Rev. and liked them. . . probably need to hear more all in good time!

I know you are kidding, 7/4, but I'm still going to state that no place on earth is like the real hell. Have a look at Luke, Chapter 16 for starters. I guess a rough idea could be gained from one of those documentaries that show the top of an active volcano.

What kind of friend would I be if I didn't warn about a place like that?

And then there's Penn Station when you're arriving at rush hour. Not nice.

Of course no place on Earth is like Hell. Rick James is their problem now.

As a fellow resident of NJ, I'm with 7/4.

On a more serious note, I'm not sure this forum is the place for religious topics. I'm not anti religious; I thing it just better belongs in the non music areas.

I love the 1920s Reverend Gates sides.

The new Columbia CD is nice, although the tracks seem to be chosen more for the content of the sermons than the music. The early recordings on Document records in sequence have a much stronger musical impact (IMO).

Frivolously?

Why do you say that?

Well, hell is real, and awful, and not to be joked about, or used as an album or song title, unless the aim is to show people how to avoid going there.

I heard yersterday about an evangelist called Carl Hatch. Before he was saved, he had a buddy who was killed when his small airplane crashed. The aircraft burst into flames on the ground and Carl heard his buddy screaming horribly. Later, he asked to see the body at the funeral home. "I wouldn't advise that", said the undertaker (the coffin was closed). But Carl insisted, so the undertaker opened the lid. He was so deeply shocked that he got saved a few days later, and is now said to be a very persuasive witness for the Lord Jesus Christ.

I hope that you will also trust Jesus as Saviour.

Speaking of fires, I just heard that Red Adair died. If he wasn't saved, he is now in a fire that he can't put out. As he was a Texan, he sure had the opportunity to get saved. I hope he was.

That makes sense.

As he was a Texan, he sure had the opportunity to get saved.

Why is that? Anyway, good news for Texans. Great!

What makes you think that Reverend Gates is frivolous or joking? The reason that his records sold so well is because he performed with perceived conviction and sincerity. The theme is exactly that: how to avoid going to hell. People didn't buy the records as a joke.

hmmmm...the tangent this topic is going on is making me a tad nervous...

Me too. I don't like it that this board can apparently be used for missionary work.

I think S has been quite respectful, explaining himself when questioned, and when introducing "evangelical" material not being pushy or persistant. I wouldn't exactly call it "missionary" . . . .

How much of this cd is SERMON and how much is MUSIC? I'm desirious myself of more music than sermon. . . . I have a number of sermons on cd and a whole lot more in my personal experience. . . . Could say I have my fill.
