EKE BBB Posted August 5, 2004 Report Posted August 5, 2004 (edited) After some research, I haven´t been able to find any discography (session by session) of Tete Montoliu. Only partial lists of releases (CD & LP), but not a real good sessionography. If any member knows about any, please let me know. I´ve decided to start making my own. My only source of material so far are my about 25 Tete discs. My only experience in putting together discographies up until now has been the work done on the Basie website, basically by using my CDs, Lord´s Discography on CDRom and Chris Sheridan´s Biodiscography. I ask for your advice on how to research on this stuff. I mean, besides web research. And I´d like any discographical information you could bring, from your collection or from any other source. Please, post any piece of information in this thread (or if you have any kind of data base, send it as an attached file via e-mail to bhdezfdez@telefonica.net). The basic data required are (as you could have supposed ), session by session: -Location -Recording date -Name of group, leader or the session... -Musicians -Tracks (with any aditional information on composers, duration, specific musicians for specific tracks, master number...) -Releases (label, title of CD/LP, number...) Thanks in advance for any information you could bring! PS: of course, this is not any commercial or even professional attempt. This is only a wish from a jazz aficionado to put together as much information as possible for the recorded output of one of my most beloved jazz artists. Thanks again! couw Posted August 5, 2004 Report Posted August 5, 2004 On the technical side: It would be a good idea to use the Brian software that can be found on http://www.jazzdiscography.com/ The only downside is that it is a bit crippled on the import/export functions, but work is being done on that, I have been told. On the plus side are a lot of auto-complete kind of functions, helping you to avoid typ-os and mix-ups. Quote

brownie Posted August 5, 2004 Report Posted August 5, 2004 Excellent idea, EKE BBB And about time! I'll try to help! Quote
EKE BBB Posted August 5, 2004 Author Report Posted August 5, 2004 I previously said I only had my discs to begin with. Well, I have Lord CDRom (last version) and that´s a starting point. If only you could edit properly those files, and not only copy and paste session by session (only txt) with that program... And if I´m gonna work with Brian 4, I´m not sure if I somehow can import data from a txt file. Quote
EKE BBB Posted August 5, 2004 Author Report Posted August 5, 2004 Thanks to all for your help and support (and to those who are contributing by mail as well!). This is just a project. I´m very busy now (Basie website, tons of work at my job, family....), but by the end of September I´ve planned to start with all this stuff. Quote
couw Posted August 5, 2004 Report Posted August 5, 2004 And if I´m gonna work with Brian 4, I´m not sure if I somehow can import data from a txt file. You cannot. But once you start typing things up, it will go faster and faster as you can select tunes/composers/artist/etc from the list of already existing entries. The reason we didn't go there for the Basie discography was that we had over 4000 complete entries already in digital format, didn't have that much time, and wanted to have the possibility of online searches. You can do all kinds of searches with Brian too, and have it spit out html files, but you cannot (yet) do these searches in realtime online. The latter is something we're still struggling with for the Basie data as well, but in deus we trust... Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted August 5, 2004 Report Posted August 5, 2004 How's this for a deal - you collect all the actual records and CDs, or photocopies of the sleeves, labels, etc. and I'll enter them all in the database for you and put it up on the web. This is what I did for the Don Friedman, Tony Zano, Tony Fruscella, Attila Zoller, Al Kiger, Joe Hunt discographies. Your name goes on it as the compiler and mine as the editor. Then when I have a question on "who wrote that tune?" - you'll have the answer. And you can deal with keeping it up-to-date by doing the research on what is being reissued, etc. You can handle all the inquiries and all the letters of thanks. And you won't have to worry about the intricacies of learning the database program or doing the tedious data entry (I've done this so much it's a breeze for me). The basic session format would look like this: http://www.jazzdiscography.com/Temp/tete-disc.htm I'm always looking for "completist" collectors who would like to collaborate in this fashion. charlesp Posted August 6, 2004 Report Posted August 6, 2004 EKE BBB, I know that "best of" lists are impossible, but can you recommend 3 to 5 Tete discs with which to start an exploration of his music. I only have The Music I Like To Play - Vol 2 on Soul Note. Thanks charles Quote
EKE BBB Posted August 9, 2004 Author Report Posted August 9, 2004 EKE BBB, I know that "best of" lists are impossible, but can you recommend 3 to 5 Tete discs with which to start an exploration of his music. I only have The Music I Like To Play - Vol 2 on Soul Note. Thanks charles Charles: It´s hard to pick just a few recordings, but I´ll try to pick some: -for his solo recordings, you could start with the two volumes of the Boston Concert (released on SteepleChase) -in a trio format, among my favorites are the three volumes also released on SteepleChase called "Catalonian Nights" with John Heard and Tootie Heath -and as for his output as a sideman, I have a love affair with a date called "Gentle Ben" (Ensayo, 1972). Beautiful music with Ben Webster in the leader role, Tete, Peer Wyboris and Eric Peter. Quote

EKE BBB Posted August 12, 2004 Author Report Posted August 12, 2004 Thank you, EKE BBB - I will start with your suggestions. You´re welcome! As I´m listening to it now, I will recommend another weakness of mine: "Blues for myself", a 1977 date recorded for the Spanish "Ensayo" label. It´s a wonderful trio date with Wyboris (d) and Peter (b), that shows Tete´s mastery in playing the blues. Oh, that "Blues for Llorach" really moves me.... Quote
EKE BBB Posted August 12, 2004 Author Report Posted August 12, 2004 And again, thanks to all those who are contributing to this project! There are guys I didn´t even know, sending us mails with additional material (lists of releases, discographical data for broadcasts, private sessions, live dates...). THANK YOU! Quote
EKE BBB Posted October 6, 2004 Author Report Posted October 6, 2004 Michael: Do you hear me? Have you received my last mails? If not, maybe there´s some trouble with my mail server. Cheers, Agustín Quote

EKE BBB Posted November 15, 2004 Author Report Posted November 15, 2004 Agustin, Did you get my email? I'm just about to head to the post office to finally send off the long awaited private Tete recordings! Dan: I replied to that e-mail (I think it was yesterday). I don´t have access to my mail folders now, but will re-send it tonight. Hope there´s no trouble with my mail account again! Anyway... ... thanks again for those broadcasts, and above all, for your interest in this project!!! Quote
EKE BBB Posted November 25, 2004 Author Report Posted November 25, 2004 Help needed on Japanese issues We´re currently working to include Japanese editions of Tete Montoliu releases (both leader and sideman dates) in the Issue Index of our Discography. Lord lists a great deal of them, but as many mistakes are included there, we want to check correct catalog numbers, release dates, tracks included in each disc and track order. As I know many of you usually buy Japanese pressings, -could you provide us with discographical information from your discs? -or could you give us links and/or addresses and/or telephone numbers for Japanese labels or Japanese branches of domestic labels? -or could you give us links and/or addresses and/or telephone numbers for some Japanese sellers (both vinyl and CD)? I know of Earlyrecords.com from Hiroshi Tano, but they currently don´t list any Tete issue. Please post them in this thread or send them to me via email to bhdezfdez@telefonica.net Thanks in advance, Agustín Quote
EKE BBB Posted November 25, 2004 Author Report Posted November 25, 2004 (edited) Check the current version of our Tete Montoliu Discography on Michael Fitzgerald´s Jazzdiscography.com website. Some unissued sessions have been added (among them, two for Fantasy label), alongside some more broadcastings and live recordings and many additions and corrections to previously listed sessions. More to come! Edited November 25, 2004 by EKE BBB Quote
EKE BBB Posted January 24, 2005 Author Report Posted January 24, 2005 Check the current version of the discography at Michael´s website: Tete Montoliu Discography Some interesting new entries have been added to the discography. Among them: -a 1956-03-12 jam session in Barcelona with Lionel Hampton and Tete Montoliu -a concert (following day) by the Lionel Hampton Orchestra featuring Tete Montoliu on two tracks, with an about 30 minutes version of "Tenderly", Montoliu´s warhorse from that era, -and a recording with Barney Wilen. Lots of new information on previously listed sessions has been added (release dates, a few alternate takes, reissues...). Still working on it. Thanks for your unselfish help! Agustín Quote
