skeith Posted March 12, 2005 Report Posted March 12, 2005 And don't forget, both Joe Lovano and Paul Motian are on the new Paul Motian Trio cd Quote
makpjazz57 Posted March 12, 2005 Report Posted March 12, 2005 Both Lovano and is wife, vocalist/educator Judi Silvano are very nice folks. In 2002, Lovano and other Woody Herman alumni were featured (along with Frank Tiberi and the current Woody Herman "herd") in a tribute to Woody Herman which was also a ceremony to commemorate the moving of Herman and his wife Charlotte's remains to a nicer final resting place in the Hollywood Forever Cemetary. The gal was held right on the cemetary grounds. I had the opportunity to ride in a van with Lovano from the hotel to the cemetary and told him how excited I was about his upcoming release, 52nd Street Themes, as I was a huge fan of Tadd Dameron's compositions and I knew he was going to feature Tadd's compositions on the new recording. His eyes lit up and he talked a bit with me about the CD, genuinely interested in happy to talk. A great guy, yes and what a thrill to hear him with Andy McGhee and other Herman alumni that evening. I'm looking forward to the May release of the 2nd recording of Lovano/Jones/Mraz Motian (I think this is the date of the release). Marla Quote
John Tapscott Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 I just picked this one up and I have to say: How could I have been so stupid not to get this one earlier? (Don't answer that Chris A.) This is a killer cd. (I guess I had just got burned out on all of those Celebrating - you fill in the blank cds.) Highly recommended!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Once again, thanks for the rec. I've been enjoying this now for a week. A beautiful CD which opens up more and more every time I listen. Every track is a gem but I especially like Thad Jones" "The Summary." Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 This same band is coming out with another CD in May. I have an advance copy and it's another good one. It's called "Joyous Encounter". Kevin Quote

Kevin Bresnahan Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 This same band is coming out with another CD in May. I have an advance copy and it's another good one. It's called "Joyous Encounter". Kevin Is it ballads? They're are a couple of ballads but it isn't all ballads. The track listing is: 1. Autumn in New York (Vernon Duke) 2. Bird's Eye View (Joe Lovano) 3. Don't Ever Leave Me (Thad Jones) 4. Alone Together (Howard Dietz/Arthur Schwartz) 5. Six and Four (Oliver Nelson) 6. Pannonica (Thelonious Monk) 7. Consummation (Thad Jones) 8. Quiet Lady (Thad Jones) 9. Joyous Encounter (Joe Lovano) 10. A Child Is Born (Thad Jones) 11. Crescent (John Coltrane) At joelovano.com, there are a couple of "video previews" there. Joe mentions that the first track, "Autumn in New York", was planned for the "Ballads" album. Kevin Quote
jazzbo Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 Wow, that looks great; I'll be looking forward to this one Quote
Guy Berger Posted March 30, 2005 Report Posted March 30, 2005 11. Crescent (John Coltrane) I'm really looking forward to hearing Motian on this tune! (Though "After the Rain" would have been even better! But maybe too predictable.) Guy Quote
alankin Posted March 31, 2005 Report Posted March 31, 2005 Anyone noticed that there are four tunes by Thad Jones? Quote
