Rooster_Ties Posted May 15, 2003 Report Posted May 15, 2003 Green, Grant (Ben Dixon) Iron City 1967 Muse OK, I've read about this 100 times, but never can remember the details. (I've never owned "Iron City", or I'm sure I'd have a better handle on this.) Isn't it really Larry Young on all (or at least part) of Iron City??? By the way, this is as good/bad a place as any to ask - what do people think of Iron City?? I've been tempted to track it down a time or two, but never have made the effort to, least not yet anyway. Should I??? Quote
connoisseur series500 Posted May 15, 2003 Report Posted May 15, 2003 I like IRON CITY quite a bit. I cannot, however, chime in regarding whether it is Big John or Larry Young on organ. I don't happen to know. Quote
Eric Posted May 15, 2003 Report Posted May 15, 2003 according to the Jazzmatazz site, the reconstituted Savoy is supposed to re-issue Iron City very soon ... if you like jazz, it is a good date ... if you like GG and organ trio stuff, it is essential ... Eric Quote
Soul Stream Posted May 15, 2003 Report Posted May 15, 2003 ...just another "this just in" about IRON CITY. I talked to George Braith a week or so ago. He was saying he was driving back from Milwaukee and had heard a Grant Green record with Larry Young on the radio. I quized him further about what it might have been. Turns out it was a cut from "Iron City." Braith thought it was weird because at the end of the tune they said it was Patton on organ. George KNEW it was Larry Young and thought they had mis-spoken. As George put it..."John didn't know those chords!" Quote
Templejazz Posted May 15, 2003 Report Posted May 15, 2003 Just an FYI, not sure about as of when, but my local Tower has Savoy's reissue of 'Iron City', along with several other former 32 Jazz-ers now on Savoy.....funny, though, I couldn't find anything regarding these reissues on Savoy's website. Wish there was some sort of definite plan on how they're going about the reissuing schedule for these. Quote

bertrand Posted January 9, 2008 Report Posted January 9, 2008 1) Iron City is Larry Young, not Patton 2) Are you sure the unissued DIW session is forthcoming? Bertrand. Quote
Aggie87 Posted January 9, 2008 Report Posted January 9, 2008 (edited) 2) Are you sure the unissued DIW session is forthcoming? Bertrand. The original post by Soulstation is almost 5 years old, and I don't know that he's going to post on the board any more. If it's forthcoming, it's had a long gestation! Or is the session "This One's For J.A."? There have also been references to a third unreleased DIW session on this board somewhere. Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted January 9, 2008 Report Posted January 9, 2008 It was here, but I had to delete the post because for some reason it was messing up the entire format of the thread. Magnificent Goldberg originally posted about the Jim Anderson / DIW sessions. Perhaps one of them will weigh in here. Quote
bertrand Posted January 9, 2008 Report Posted January 9, 2008 Thelma Patton also told me about the unissued DIW session. Bertrand. Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted January 9, 2008 Report Posted January 9, 2008 http://johnpatton.blogspot.com/2007/03/big...atton-live.html hopefully not complete BJP 1988-2001 live recordings..... Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted January 9, 2008 Report Posted January 9, 2008 this isnt a mp3 blog so its okay to post this, right? Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted January 9, 2008 Report Posted January 9, 2008 Aha! "This one's for JA" was recorded on 26 December 1995 and issued on DIW919. Personnel is: Patton Dave Hubbard, ts Ed Cherry, g Eddie Gladden, d Lawrence Killian, perc The JA is Jim Anderson, who recorded and mixed the album at Power Station. It's a great album. So I'm going to play it as soon as the George Braith's finished MG Quote
bertrand Posted January 10, 2008 Report Posted January 10, 2008 I think the JA was legendary Newark tenor Jimmy Anderson, but I could be wrong. Bertrand. Quote
Aggie87 Posted January 10, 2008 Report Posted January 10, 2008 I think the JA was legendary Newark tenor Jimmy Anderson, but I could be wrong. Bertrand. From the liner notes: "Recorded and Mixed by Jim Anderson Recorded at Power Station, NYC, on December 26, 1995 ... Special Thanks to John Zorn and Thelma Patton Dedicated to our friend, Jimmy Anderson" I believe you're correct. Quote

Soul Stream Posted January 10, 2008 Report Posted January 10, 2008 J.A. is tenor player Jimmy Anderson. John Patton told me this himself, and Thelma has mentioned it as well in conversations after John's death. Quote
andybleaden Posted January 16, 2008 Report Posted January 16, 2008 it is mine so I give you permission! No it is not an mp3 blog Just some info Enjoy Quote
andybleaden Posted January 16, 2008 Report Posted January 16, 2008 I think there is also the recent tracks he recorded with George Braith prior to his death we have mentioned here before but the name escapes me. The live stuff by the way some of it is absolutely wonderful and worth a cd alone Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted January 16, 2008 Report Posted January 16, 2008 it is mine so I give you permission! No it is not an mp3 blog Just some info Enjoy Nice stuff Andy. Two bits of info. The date of the Elbo Room gig wasn't 27 March 1997, it was 27 March 1999. I found an ad for the gig on the web somewhere, listing the personnel. Must be the same gig. Here's a link to some old thing about it. http://tisue.net/chicagonow/old1999.html And here's an archive of the thing I found http://www.xmission.com/pub/lists/zorn-list/archive/v02.n634 Whit - whoever he is - says it was originally given to him as 1999 but "the correct date would appear to be 1997", though he adduces no evidence for this. And the slow jam on that recording is "I'll be seeing you". MG Quote
andybleaden Posted January 18, 2008 Report Posted January 18, 2008 (edited) er yes I have not updated that since I learnt that previously..erm shuffle erm will maybe get around to it It don't half kick though do you not think? btw that was an interesting resource....the 2nd one Edited January 18, 2008 by andybleaden Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted January 18, 2008 Report Posted January 18, 2008 It don't half kick though do you not think? Indeed it does! I think it would be nice for someone who knows Ken Vandermark's work well to hear it. Whenever I listen to it, I'm not sure whether Ken's just done his homework or whether that's what he really is like, (or how far along between the two this is). MG Quote
