ejp626 Posted July 26, 2004 Report Posted July 26, 2004 This is probably a stupid question, but is there any overlap between the material in the Disques Vogue In Paris series and the Jazz in Paris box set? I am looking at a DV sampler and can see several sessions (Monk/Joe Turner for example) that are clearly not part of Jazz in Paris. I already have Jazz in Paris, but kind of passedon Disques Vogue, even though Tower used to sell them cheap. Is there a list of the entire series anywhere? How are they in general? Any sessions that are must have? Thanks in advance. Eric Quote
jazzbo Posted July 26, 2004 Report Posted July 26, 2004 No, you won't find any or much at all repitition; Jazz in Paris is culled from labels now owned and distributed by Verve/Universal, whereas les Vogues were from labels owned and distributed by BMG. . . . There is a third series, Americans Swinging in Paris that is pulled from EMI controlled labels. . . Three great series of cds with little to no overlap! Quote
couw Posted July 26, 2004 Report Posted July 26, 2004 No overlap. Disque Vogue is under the RCA-Victor/BMG Umbrella, JiP is Universal/Verve. Quote
couw Posted July 26, 2004 Report Posted July 26, 2004 yay! simultaneous similar message posting! so now all we need is for someone to pop up with a list. Quote
jazzbo Posted July 26, 2004 Report Posted July 26, 2004 Therea are many great Vogue discs in both the American and French series of reissues, including the Barney Wilen, the Bobby Jaspars, the Lucky Thompsons, the Jimmy Raneys, the Clifford Browns, honestly there's not a "dog" among them. I've not recently encountered a complete listing or two. . . . Quote
jazzbo Posted July 26, 2004 Report Posted July 26, 2004 Well isn't it understood that the Monk is essential? I mean. . . And he mentioned it in his post so he knows he's going to have to find it. Quote
couw Posted July 26, 2004 Report Posted July 26, 2004 yeah, but he really shouldn't forget in all the excitement it's better to be reminded too often than to miss out Quote

The one I don't have is the Mary Lou Williams. ubu edit: added Zoot Sims (has been part of the Trueblue Catalogue for a long time - a good one!) edit: added Pettiford, Hampton & Mulligans edit: added the Brownies Edited July 28, 2004 by king ubu Quote
brownie Posted July 27, 2004 Report Posted July 27, 2004 The Andre Hodeir album was titled 'The Vogue Sessions'. Missing are two Gerry Mulligan releases of the 1954 Pleyel concerts. Quote
JSngry Posted July 27, 2004 Report Posted July 27, 2004 Was the Bechet/Solal side a Vogue? Been looking for that sucker ever since it came and went in a New York minute on an Inner City LP last century. Quote
brownie Posted July 27, 2004 Report Posted July 27, 2004 Was the Bechet/Solal side a Vogue? Been looking for that sucker ever since it came and went in a New York minute on an Inner City LP last century. It sure was. That session with Lloyd Thompson on bass and Al Ledvitt on drums. A beauty! Bechet was exclusively recording for Vogue by then! Quote
JSngry Posted July 27, 2004 Report Posted July 27, 2004 Thanks, Brownie! Is it just my imagination, or has that thing yet to see CD? Quote
brownie Posted July 27, 2004 Report Posted July 27, 2004 Is it just my imagination, or has that thing yet to see CD? Can't remember having seen this on CD. A quick search over the internet also proved negative. I am sticking with my original LP copy. Thompson and Levitt were with Bechet and Solal on one of the two sessions. Pierre Michelot and Kenny Clarke were on the second session. Quote
jazzbo Posted July 27, 2004 Report Posted July 27, 2004 Man I have to hear that one day! Hopefully a lot of the Vogue and RCA Bechet sessions will get a good cd reissue program dedicated to them. . . (I can still hope for a few things!) Quote
king ubu Posted July 27, 2004 Report Posted July 27, 2004 I hope we'll see something like the series I put the list together of, but I guess we won't... BMG are maybe the most moronic among the big ones, as far as marketing and reissuing jazz goes... well, except for Bluebird! ubu Quote

There's a difference? Not sure. They at least have those digipacks, and some new ones from time to time (well, only if you like Dave Douglas, I guess). Quote

jazzbo Posted July 27, 2004 Report Posted July 27, 2004 And soon to be? Bluebird = RCA = BMG/SONY or SONY/BMG Quote
king ubu Posted July 27, 2004 Report Posted July 27, 2004 And soon to be? Bluebird = RCA = BMG/SONY or SONY/BMG So the best we can hope for is a Legacy-like programme? That would be far better than anything that BMG/RCA/Bluebird has on offer at the moment! Quote

The RCA "First Editions" reissues of Sonny Rollins' The Bridge and Paul Desmond / Gerry Mulligan's Two of a Mind are beautiful, though. Quote
