Monk Song for French Film?

Doing another reel transfer, and on this one-from '63, Monk is heard saying this tune, "Bye bye when the morning comes," was made for a French film.

Anyone know more about this? Is the movie obscure? Did he record this tune anywhere else?

And something else I'm curious about-in all of the live recordings I've heard or seen, I can't recall Monk speaking to the audience. Is this a doubly rare recording, both for the tune and for Monk introducing it?

I've been wondering about the tunes that Monk cut for the 'Les Liaisons Dangereuses' film.

Never have seen it, but supposedly Monk's music was in it briefly. From the notes it states that the session for the film was recorded in NYC w/ Sam Jones, A.T. and Rouse and Wilen!! Evidently the session is used in the film but the tunes on the OST w/ the Messengers are from a later session w/o Monk, of course.

Quite a coup it would be if these sides could be un-earthed. We'd love to here Monk and Wilen doing it.

Certainly Brownie will drop in and set us straight on this!

The film Dan Gould is referring cannot be Roger Vadim's 'Les Liaisons Dangereuses'. The Monk sountrack to the film was discussed in an early thread;

And Barney Wilen unfortunately did not play with the Monk unit. Good old Monk partner Charlie Rouse was the chosen one!

I have no idea which French film Dan could be referring unless it might be a documentary. After all, Monk was indeed in France in 1963.

Yes, this does have to do with Les Liaisons Dangereuses. From Chris Sheridan's excellent Brilliant Corners bio-discography, p. 95.

The tunes is "Bye & Bye" by Rodgers & Hart. Not from a French film but from the stage musical "Dearest Enemy".

Sheridan also notes that Wilen is added to the quartet for two titles. Only four tunes made the original movie, but apparently a video version (Castle 9021) includes those AND eleven more.

Monk also played "Bye & Bye" on a German TV show (March 2, 1963). In both instances it's just one minute of solo piano. I wonder if this is what is being referred to? The setlist was: Epistrophy, Off Minor, Bye & Bye, Round Midnight, Blue Monk, Criss Cross, Epistrophy.

The info I have doesn't refer to TV, says Baden Baden, circa 1963. It is a minute of solo piano. All told, the set list is shorter: Off Minor, Bye and Bye, Round Midnight, Blue Monk, Criss Cross.

What about my question regarding Monk making a stage announcement?

I have a tape of Monk in the '50s introducing the tunes, thanking the audience and introducing the rest of the trio.

The two performances of Epistrophy are just "theme" statements (0:55 and 1:24), the kind of thing that frequently gets left off listings.

i think what sheridan's entry means is that the first four tunes (stated as "rehearsal takes") are unissued, and not in the film. the film includes the other 11 performances. there is also 2:30 of crepuscule with nellie played during the opening credits, which is not listed in sheridan's entry.
