Big Wheel Posted July 25, 2004 Report Posted July 25, 2004 Just adding to the knowledge base on the board in case anyone else is having similar problems: Over the last three days, I had a bizarre problem getting into the board. Eventually, I discovered that not only would I get "400 Bad Request" errors when trying to post to any board powered by the Invision Power Board Software, but I also couldn't access my Yahoo mail Inbox. This also happened whenever I connected on my notebook PC from home, which never had any problems with the board before. After much googling I figured out that this problem is with the D-Link wireless router that's connected to my DSL modem on this machine. You basically have to go into the router software and slightly lower one setting (the Maximum Transmission Unit or MTU setting). Voila! Quote
vibes Posted July 25, 2004 Report Posted July 25, 2004 Very strange. I've been using a D-Link wireless router for 3 years and have never had a problem like that. Thanks for the heads up, though. Quote
Big Wheel Posted July 25, 2004 Author Report Posted July 25, 2004 It may be that the problem doesn't occur on every model of router or even on every revision of a particular model. Here I'm using a DI-624, A1 revision. From their website: Q: Why can“t I connect to certain sites or send and receive emails when connecting through my router? A: The current firmware allows the maximum transmission unit to be changed if needed. If you are having a problem sending or receiving email, or connecting to secure sites such as EBay, banking sites, and Hotmail, we suggest lowering the MTU in increments of ten (Ex. 1492, 1482, 1472, etc). AOL DSL+ users must use MTU of 1400. To change the MTU rate follow the steps below: For the DI-514, DI-524, DI-604, DI-614+, DI-624, DI-754, DI-764, DI-774, and DI-784: Step 1 Open your browser, enter the IP address of your router (192.168.0.1) and click OK. Step 2 Enter your username (admin) and password (blank by default). Click OK to enter the web configuration page for the device. Step 3 Click on the Home tab and go to the WAN tab. Step 4 The default MTU is 1500, to change this enter the number in the MTU field and click the Apply button to save your settings. Step 5 Test your email. If changing the MTU does not resolve the problem, continue changing the MTU in increments of ten. Note: If you have the European version of the DI-604, this procedure will not work. If you do not have an MTU option, please upgrade your firmware. Quote
Dmitry Posted July 25, 2004 Report Posted July 25, 2004 D-link has a pretty good customer srvc. Giving them a call is a better alternative than spending time trying to fix a problem on your own, imo. Quote
Big Wheel Posted July 25, 2004 Author Report Posted July 25, 2004 (edited) No doubt...once I pinpointed the router as the problem, it wasn't very long before I found the solution on the web page. It was determining the problem was the router that was the hassle! I called up BellSouth, my ISP, figuring it was some weird proxy server problem, and they were clueless (in fairness to them, I didn't tell them I was hooked up to a wireless router--hell, I didn't even remember that the router was still plugged into this PC). Good to know that D-Link is responsive, though. Edited July 25, 2004 by Big Wheel Quote
vibes Posted July 25, 2004 Report Posted July 25, 2004 Yeah, my router isn't one of the ones listed. I've never had any problems with it, and I've been very pleased with its performance. Although, I have been contemplating upgrading to an 802.11g router. I just got a Centrino laptop and connected to a g network a few weeks ago for the first time, and was pretty impressed with the speed. Quote
